if you missed week ones edition and the explanation of how i'm going about things you can find it here...http://www.finheaven.com/showthread...4-season-tale-of-the-tape-week-1-pats-at-fins

as promised this edition the fat has been trimmed somewhat...if i needed to explain the formation i did if you are checking this against the actual game it still should be easy for you to follow and to pick up on a 4 receiver set if you see one without me having to say it...this is game 2 in a new offense...and a hostile environment to boot with as fierce a front 4 as you will find in football...some tendencys in play calling start to show and again the qb is not allowed to check out at the los or adjust to what he sees which is huge for staying out of bad plays...anyways one last thing...it got to the point where i was gonna have to say pretty much every snap good read good decision going forward unless i tell you the read was wrong or the decision a bad one know that it was the correct one...

WEEK 2 MIAMI AT BUFFALO

31-49 241 yards 1 td 1 int 4.9 ypa 4 sacks 31 yards lost…what does the tape say???

1[SUP]st[/SUP] QUARTER
11:45 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 0-0 score Mia 13 yard line shotgun 3 wr single back to the right of Tannehill Lamar Miller…takes the snap looks to the back Miller on the short out just past the sticks comes back to Gibson working a cross behind the LB level for 12 yard gain with interior pocket collapsing into his lap from the front…Shelley Smith bull rushed right back into the QBs lap +1

10:34 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 4 0-0 score Mia 31 yard line shotgun both sides stacked receivers takes the snap play fakes to the RB looks to the 2 wide side where Gibson stays in behind the los post snap for a dump in man coverage and it’s covered wants to work to Clay working a crosser behind the LB level but can't get to him has to side step an immediate up the middle pressure from Shelley Smiths man Kyle Williams then steps up inside and is engulfed by Mario Williams…nice job to side step the initial DT rusher inside nothing to step up into…no chance to work thru progressions +1

9:48 3rd and 8 0-0 score Mia 27 yard line shotgun 3 wide back in front of Tannehill pre snap to pick up the LB in pass pro takes the snap has time but Shelley Smith again walked back and then to ground…QB can set his feet and step thru misses a Clay out route at the sticks -1

4:47 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 0-3 score Mia 25 yard line shotgun 3 wide Wallace in 8 yard off man coverage clean release DE Mario Williams on play side QB throws the stop/curl route for 6 yards to Wallace placed correctly around a leaping Williams closing fast +1

3:11 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 9 0-3 score Mia 36 yard line shotgun good job of head in the middle of the field in his drop deep post vs 8 yards off man coverage to Wallace who’s won inside with no help and if it’s out in front and to the middle of the field it’s a TD and the balls placed too far outside and underthrown -1

3:03 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 9 0-3 score Mia 36 yard line shotgun 2 wide Landry motions inside the formation then back outside to a trips look WR screen to Landry behind the los 3 yard gain…all play call +1

:18 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 0-6 score Mia 17 yard line shotgun Wallace vs 8 yards off coverage sells the vertical and runs a 16 yard stop route vs bail coverage released before Wallace ever gears down placed spot on18 yard gain +1

2[SUP]nd[/SUP] QUARTER

15:00 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 0-6 score Mia 35 yard line hard run play fake to the strong side sold well by the QB rolls out to the right for Clay releasing late behind the los…Wallace on that side at the snap runs a vertical to clear out coverage Miami is banking on the safety in coverage responsible for Clay taking the bait and flowing inside the formation and taking false steps that way to give Clay space for the catch and turn up field with nothing but green in front of him off the hard misdirection to the opposite side…safety does not take the bait stays home cause he trust his run defenders to do the job without him and fires out of a cannon for a 5 yard loss tackle…play call all the way +1

14:17 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 15 0-6 score Mia 30 yard line shotgun takes the snap head is looking left in his drop trying to influence lbs and safeties finishes starts to set up sees color Kyle Williams up the middle beaten Shelley Smith like a drum tries to side step it cannot no chance…sack 10 yard loss…protection all the way +1

13-32 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 25 Mia 20 yard line this is a down and distance you usually call a screen or a draw play out of backed up this deep in your own territory and concede a punt shotgun Tannehill drops then steps up forward going thru progressions Bills DE runs upfield and then loops inside of the up field DT engaged to lose Albert and clean to the QB for a sack when he steps up inside…this one’s as much on the protection as it is the qb but I think he held the ball too long trying to wait for a route to develop down the field given the sticks…really a 50/50 one but the qb grade is -1

10:22 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 0-9 score Mia 20 yard line shotgun takes snap pivots to Wallace vs an 8 yards off coverage presnap wants the easy 5 yard stop route ball thrown low and to the ground DB watching QB the entire way hesitates just slightly to come forward and I think Tannehill saw it last second and threw it in the ground worried about a jump of the route…smart play to throw it in the ground…from what I see the WRs on the opposite side of the formation are blocking as if it’s a run call that due to the off coverageTannehill kept the ball on and the linemen inside the formation are blocking downfield past the 2 yard legal zone like it is also…it’s as if the QB gaveWallace a signal on the play given the coverage wanting an easy 5 yards and no one else was told about it…strange stuff…as it was the only receiver option and he didn’t make a mistake on it my grade is +1

10:19 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 10 0-9 score Mia 20 yard line 4 wide total 2 tight ends to the trips side shotgun takes the snap play fakes tothe RB Sims is running a tight to the formation inside clear out route Clay is working a delayed in cut behind it to take advantage of the void created by the clear out...Tannehill pivots perfectly to the in cut and hits Clay with rac in front of him but he bobbles and drops it…another nice example of the footwork and pivot work growth of the QB +1

10:13 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 15 0-9 score Mia 20 yard line shotgun zone coverage wants the hash 5 yard out cut to Sims in the hole in the zone for a manageable 2[SUP]nd [/SUP]down ball is tipped at the los by Dareus incomplete…good job by the lineman recognizing he can’t get there and gettingu p in the air…QB will eat this one as in this case he needs to throw it around that but it’s more a good play by the defender than anything the QB did…good read good decision but failed execution -1

10:08 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 15 0-9 score Mia 20 yard line shotgun screen to Landry placed to his front shoulder leading him into the throw and letting him get upfield and vertical from the get go…8 yard gain play call but executed spot on by the QB +1

6:47 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 7 0-9 score Mia 35 yard line under center fakes the inside hand off fakes the slot reverse to Mathews wants to work the 2 vertical routes Hartline and Wallace are working with Mathews wheeling around on the swing as the 3rd option…this is a take a shot attempt play…goes to set up is staring at a clean up the middle LB blitzer that Miller needs to see on the play and pick up but instead he sits never sees it then rolls out to the flat to be the last man on the progression and leaves a flat footed Tannehill to deal with it…QB side steps LB has Tannehill by one leg and is pulling him to ground he flips the ball forward to the flat to Miller while going to ground drops at Millers feet he catches it for 4 yard loss…one of two things happened on this play…either Miller blew the protection or Miami got caught in a protection that didn’t account for the LB blitz and it ruined the play…either way not on the QB good job to get the ball out of hand and not take that would have been big lost yardage sack on the play +1

5:59 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 11 0-9 score Mia 32 yard line shotgun 7 step drop blown protection up front releases Mario Williams up the middlec ompletely free to the QB never gets to set up bails eludes Williams and runs the ball before taking a sideline hit out of bounds no call 2 yard gain...awful blown protection there…QB had no chance +1

Just going to notate this here…Miami gets the ball back inside it’s own 20 yard line at the 12 with 3 timeouts and 2:20 on the clock and runs the ball every play to run the clock out for the half…I’m sure concerned about protection and potential mistakes as a result given what was going on in the game

3[SUP]rd[/SUP] QUARTER

15:00 1[SUP]ST[/SUP] and 10 0-9 score Mia 20 yard line shotgun hits Wallace on the boundary vs 10 yards off man coverage on a 15 yard stop route ball arrives just prior to contact…13 yard gain cause the dinosaur official marked it where he was tackled not the forward progress +1

13:42 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 5 0-9 score Mia 38 yard line right DE jumps the count is offsides pressures Tannehill immediately he dumps off to Lamar Miller out of the backfield who gains the corner on a LB in space and picks up 15 yards…Millers acceleration on display once he gained the corner…Albert throws his hands up in the air while the play is still going on at the officials making sure they saw it +1

13:19 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 0-9 score Mia 49 yard line shotgun 4 wide and single back Clay motions across the formation late Tannehill looks to his right after finishing his drop has time looks inside feels inside pressure bails out to his right and hits Clay on the run for an 8 yard gain at the sideline +1

12:05 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 0-9 score Buf 38 yard line shotgun 4 wide stacked 2 on each side of the formation as a result both DBsc overing the off the los WRs are at depth Tannehill hits the clean released Wallace for a 12 yard out route timed spot on +1

11:21 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 12 0-9 score Buf 28 yard line shotgun carries out the play fake to the rb Miller Clay releases off the los at the los to the flat vz under zone gains 5 yards…vs that coverage that’s about all you can get out of that play…need man to man and pressure and then you have more chunk yardage opportunity…but that’s the primary on the play call and Buffalo for what I see is rarely blitzing no doubt depending on that front to provide pressure +1

11:00 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 7 0-9 score Buf 23 yard line shotgun Lamar Miller lined up in front of the QB pre snap in pick up pass protection due to the blitz showing LB in the inside gap QB takes the snap has 4 wide vs man pumps takes a step back and off his back foot fires a ball with Lamar Miller on the ground at his feet to Hartline working an in cut placed spot on for 8 yard gain and conversion…big time throw right there…not the best mechanics but arm strength accuracy and placement off an uneven platform all on display +1

10:32 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 0-9 score Buf 15 yard line RZ shotgun play fake 3 receivers Clay leaks out from in line off tackle Gibson runs clear out Wallace sits down in the short hole and Clay works outside of him to the flat… QB hits Clay in space on a play where I just flat don’t like the call…how many times you going to show the Clay leak out and make it the play call before a defense shuts it down…heck they were on it from the get go even…1 yard loss…Tannehill either has the short sit route to Wallace or the flat to Clay he picks the route that has the potential to gain the corner with rac like he should but Buffalo has seen this same leak out too many times +1

9:48 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 11 0-9 score Buf 16 yard line RZ shotgun 4 wide QB knows pre snap there is no safety to the top side Mathews has inside leverage pre snap on a 10 yard off boundary corner this is the kind of look Wallace would rarely get in this field position due to the speed threat…Mathews runs a post and takes it vertical in the stem and cuts inside the balls delivered to the numbers and the DB gets a hand in there …the balls delivered timing wise dead on it just needs to be a little more out in front instead of between the #s and it’s a TD…that route vs that coverage and no help should score a TD provided the qb reads it right…hard grade here but -1

9:44 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 11 0-9 score Buf 16 yard line RZ shotgun 4 wide Clay and Gibson stacked up top Gibson gets free clean release runs a sell the out (LB overcommits and loses site chasing it) pivot back inside and QB has time overthrows Gibson high over his head and slightly behind him on a play if placed out front he might score…poor throw protection held up -1

9:19 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 3-16 score Mia 36 yard line shotgun play fake hits Landry working a slot slant vs off coverage into the middle of the field ball out in front catch and rac 18 yard gain +1

8:01 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 3 3-16 score Buf 41 yard line shotgun fakes to Clay in the flat pivots back to the play call a screen to Miller great play by the DE to get a finger on it and deflect it otherwise Miami has nothing but green gas and lead blocking out front…Colledge cuts the only LB that had a shot on the play and Miami ran a clear out boundary to the play side Miller would have probably scored on it +1

7:56 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 3 3-16 score Buf 41 yard line shotgun Miller in the backfield Tannehill looks down the middle in his drop and then to Miller who has rolled out into the flat with no defender within 10 yards of him…QB throws off his back foot bailing out for no reason even and throws too far outside of a diving Miller on what should be an easy catch and conversion…one of the worst plays I have ever seen Tannehill make …cannot happen -1

7:51 4[SUP]th[/SUP] and 3 3-16 score Buf 41 yard line shotgun wants Landry the entire time on a to the sticks crosser from the slot has to wait for him to win inside and get body position and then throws to the front shoulder for a catch and 8 yard gain and conversion…nice bounce back play off the terrible 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] down missed one +1

6:44 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 20 3-16 score Buf 43 yard line shotgun rolls to his right and the far hash pivots to the backside screen to Sims releasing late but the DE on that side doesn’t take the bait all the way and Tannehill has to throw it over the DE and the balls a little high but the play has no chance as the Bills defenders are waiting for it to the play side...result is incomplete best thing that could have happened +1

6:33 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 15 3-16 score Buf 38 yard line shotgun after an offsides penalty takes the snap finishes his drop and steps into a deep out route to Gibson held in the stem of his route and the ball is thrown over a leaping safety covering Clay from depth into the flat and just prior to contact from the inside again…nice throw nice read placed properly 15 yard gain +1

6:09 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 3-16 score Buf 33 yard line (we got hozed out of 10 yards by the way 15 yard completion 5 yard holding penalty I sure hope we didn’t decline that gain???) WR screen to Mathews gains 3 yards all play call +1

4:53 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 3 3-16 score Buf 26 yard line shotgun hits Hartline working a shallow cross vs zone at the sticks between zone defenders…nice read nice throw 7 yard gain and conversion +1

4:17 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 3-16 score Buf 19 yard line RZ shotgun finishes his drop wants the corner route to Wallace but DB has outside leverage the entire way would be throwing that into coverage…maybe if you had a bigger WR there who would play a body position game you take a shot there given the one on one but with Wallace and the outside leveraged DB the entire time in the route and that ball being thrown into coverage as a result you have to go to the next progression…comes off it to the back one on one releasing in space vs a LB +1

3:20 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 3 3-16 score Buf 7 yard line RZ under center knows he has a free released edge rusher coming on the play takes a huge bucket step backwards immediately post snap to give him the time and space and witha rusher in his face drops a dime fade to the outside shoulder of Mike Wallace who one hands it on his way to the ground and a TD…that’s money right there…the smarts to know that there is a clean rusher not accounted for and the need to take that huge step back as a result find time and space and then the throw…money +1

:09 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 15 10-23 score Mia 8 yard line shotgun Tannehill hits Hartline vs a 10 yard off coverage stop route and he comes back to the football 11 yard gain +1

4[SUP]th[/SUP] QUARTER

15:00 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 4 10-23 score Mia 19 shotgun play fake wants Wallace on the in cut sold well by the WR before the cut and the fill LB on the inside run comes up to the los and jumps in the throwing lane and tips it -1

14:56 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 4 10-23 score Mia 19 yard line shotgun Miller releases from the backfield down the seam Miami slants the protection inside to pick up the interior blitzer Buffalo drops Kyle Williams into a middle zone Mario Williams releases clean to the QB as the result of the slanted protection in a now 4 man rush and Tannehill vs zone with Williams closing fast has Miller down the seam and probably gonna score after he clears that initial level of defenders which he has beaten angle wise and he drops it and goes to ground…big play in the game right there…QB grade +1

10:32 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-26 score Mia 20 yard line shotgun finishes his drop Dallas Thomas who has replaced Shelley Smith for poor play gets rag dolled and tossed to the ground by Kyle Williams Tannehill climbs forward in the pocket and takes off for a 5 yard gain…nice play by the QB to see that pressure and climb forward to elude it +1

10:00 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 5 10-26 score Mia 25 yard line shotgun hits Clay working a out route from the slot ball placed out in front for rac potential takes it an extra 2 yards as result +1

9:41 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-26 score Mia 32 yard line shotgun hits Hartline on an in cutter vs off coverage good read based on the coverage and gain…go to the most off coverage underneath of it for easy yards 4 yard gain +1

9:10 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 5 10-26 score Mia 37 yard line shotgun throws to Mathews on a stop route vs inside leveraged DB placed where it should be over the outside shoulder…ball is high but catchable where only Mathews can make a play 10 yard gain off the board dropped +1

9:05 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 5 10-26 score Mia 37 yard line shotgun looks to Landry in the slot doubled comes off it pivots inside to Clay on a singled up crosser with a lb draped on his back and throws the ball where only his man can make a play…Clay won inside across the LBs face ball placed spot on 6 yard gain +1

8:35 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-26 score Mia 43 yard line shotgun reads zone pre snap holds his head and eyes in the middle of the field in his drop running 4 verticals comes to Mathews working down the seam inside of the defender and the balls thrown behind and inside…I think he wants Mathews to sit down over that first level of defenders once he clears them and he carries the route but this may just be a bad throw behind the WR…I’m not sure on this one…QB may be pressing chasing the scoreboard -1

8:30 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 10 10-26 score Mia 43 yard line Shotgun 5 yard stop routes on the boundary vs zone hits Hartline for 5 yard gain +1

4:15 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-26 score Mia 20 yard lineshotgun wide pressure on each edge steps forward up into an inside defender for a sack…the kids trying to make a play but there’s no pocket to step up into still I think he held the ball…needs to bypass progressions there and go to the check down back -1

3:46 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 16 10-26 score Mia 15 yard line shotgun hits Clay on an out route for rac 12 yard gain +1

3:41 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 4 10-26 score mia 27 yard line shotgun zone tries to hit Hartline over the drop lb level between defenders ona square in…Hartline needs to play that ball better…QB trying to make a play +1

3:36 4[SUP]th[/SUP] and 4 10-26 score Mia 27 yard line shotgun tries to his Hartline on a corner route correct decision DB makes a nice play to get a hand on the ball incomplete…I got no issue with that…he’s got Miller in the underside flat open but that’s last on the progression on the play +1

1:54 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-29 score Mia 20 yard line shotgun drop out zone hits Landry working a crosser in front of the zone 14 yard gain +1

1:47 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-29 score Mia 34 yard line shotgun more drop zone hits the RB underneath 11 yard catch and run +1

1:38 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-29 score Mia 44 yard line shotgun pump fakes and throws deep to Hartline who’s run by the zone drop defenders influenced by the pump fake and the ball goes right thru hartlines hands 50 plus yard gain off the board +1

1:30 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 10 10-29 score Mia 44 yard line shotgun deep drop zone shallow crosser to Gibson for 11 yard catch and run +1

1:00 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-29 score Buf 45 yard line shotgun deep drop zone again hits the RB sitting down in the middle of the field in front of the coverage and 17 yard catch and run +1

:34 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-29 score Buf 28 yard line shotgun hits Gibson on an out route vs off man coverage 5 yard gain +1

:27 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 5 10-29 score Buf 23 yard line shotgun Albert oversets to the outside gets beaten by a redirection back insideTannehill has no choice but to dump to the back prior to contact 3 yard gain +1

:21 3rd and 2 10-29 score Buf 20 yard line shotgun wants the deep boundary route to Mathews but there’s an inside safety sitting at depth there also and the balls overthrown…looked like Mathews may have cleared that safety who got caught staying inside and flat footed just a tick too long…I’ll put that one on the throw even though that coverage makes for a difficult play..if he throws it down the boundary line possible Mathews goes and gets it
-1

:16 4[SUP]th[/SUP] and 2 10-29 score Buf 20 yard line shotgun Landry top side one on one deep over the top safety landry fakes inside wins outside runs a depth out undercut by the defender who knows he has help behind him should he guess wrong…nice trail coverage play by the db...that’s a throw away turnover really but it goes down as a -1

Final score 29-10 Buffalo

Game summary 47+ grades 10- grades
My takeaways thru 2 games…inside pass protection poor…right guard especially...shelley smith terrible in pass pro the first 2 weeks before he was benched and his replacement dallas thomas bailed out multiple times by the qb in week 2...2 games and the interior olines play has been a major problem…QB has left tds on the field at least 4 that I have counted…reads and decisions remain a major strength despite the newness to the offense…drops and quick pressure contributing as well…foot and pivot work from one progression to the next and when he has time working thru his progressions is apparent as is head and eye discipline…4 sacks 2 I put on the protection and 2 that while the protection broke down and the sticks meant wanting longer routes to develop he needs to get the ball out on even if it’s a dump off and i felt he at least contributed to…the only real threat to the opposition of the qbs skill position players is Mike Wallace…

Next edition to come Kansas City at Miami

i guess i should add look at all that shotgun fellas...you think they were worried about the protection a little bit???

Where do you get all this tape? Did you just record it on your tv?

Wow Hoops, just wow! Very thorough bro, appreciate the write up.

Kid has all the mental acuity of a star QB, needs to rid himself of taking unnecessary sacks, and requires NFL level talent around him.

I can't believe a quality thread like this gets no run, but a thread about how bad the qb is gets to 800 replies..

Those buffalo games are always hard to relive...just a flat out QB beating

It has to feel like this at times...

Anyways...good write up...both games seem pretty positive (even though many thought he was playing poorly) and it seems like you are on the same page as PFF (who graded Tannehilll out well over the first few weeks).

I don't know if he has the package, but the NFL actually sells the coaches' film to anyone these days. On NFL.com you can sign up for a package that includes the full broadcast of every game, condensed versions, and the coaches' film, which is indexed play by play. It's really, really cool.

NFL rewind...love it

I really liked the 3rd quarter from Ryan in this game. Despite the issues in the first half he hung in there and drove for points to get us back in the game. After being shutout in previous Buffalo game last year and having a scoreless 1st half it would have been easy to get down and give up. But he didn't. Unfortunately special teams and defense couldn't get stops in the 3rd. I think the work he did here in the 3rd quarter gave him confidence when he faced Buffalo the second time and finally beat them. So while the results weren't there he learned what it takes to score points against Buffalo and was able to do so in second meeting.

Thanks for the write up hoops.

Because many fans don't have the patience for the process of developing a QB. They look at wins and losses and equate the result to QB performance. If the record is not where their expectations are then the need for change must be the answer.

Are there areas that need improvement? Absolutely but, the bottom line is that he's good and getting better.

Appreciate these . Thanks !!! Yea this kid is only getting better every year . I never invest in jerseys but I got two of his this year .

This was a game that the deck was stacked against whoever was visiting. It was imperative to take the crowd out of it early and it didn't happen. 71 pointed out that he bounced back in the second half and that is something that gets unfairly knocked on by some. He has shown numerous times that he is mentally tough and has the ability to bounce back when things go bad.

Tannehill had more than one drive this year that could've very easily been "game winning drives " from behind . The problem is that the defense would allow the other team to march right back down again. Unfortunately a lot of people who don't follow football too much think the answer is to blame the QB.

Great write up hoops. After awhile I just took it for granted they were in shotgun. The interior of this o-line needs a major upgrade this offseason. Franklin better be very high up on the Fins FA list if he makes it there. I could only imaging the number of times you rewound the tape and said to yourself "what the **** is Colledge/Satelle/Smith/Thomas doing?"
