Pouncey’s fate seemed tied to the Dolphins for ‘18.
And then at 11:20 p.m. on March 14, the first day of free agency, the Dolphins got a call from the San Francisco 49’ers. They had just signed center Weston Richburg to a five-year contract worth up to $47.5 million with $16.5 million fully guaranteed.
So the Niners, who in February signed Kilgore to a three-year extension to be their starting center, were now looking to trade Kilgore.
At 11:30 p.m. Tannenbaum called Gase and presented him with the “opportunity” San Francisco had just presented to him.
Yes, it was a long night after that.

I'm glad that Pouncey is off the team. It felt foolish to get rid of Landry and Ajayi and finally even Suh and still be hanging on to Pouncey. In my view Pouncey was a typical big contract, little production, and the guy couldn't practice with the team which led to all kinds of penalties and mistakes. I can't believe the Chargers signed Pouncey to some pretty big money. Better them than us.

The Dolphins offered Pouncey a pay cut, knowing he would decline and knowing he would then be released.

Same thing they did with Landry. Offered him something they knew he would turn down, that way they could get it out there making them out to be the good guys.

The Fins did everything short of buying TV ads to let the world know he was available, and NO ONE offered more than the Fins, they had the best offer AINEC... Landry overpriced himself to a point the Browns traded for him WITHOUT a contract extension... Landry is getting ****ed by his agent, and if Landry gets any kind of injury this season playing on the Tag, his agent will be flipping burgers in the near future...

This is definitely addition by subtraction. I was never a huge fan of his and even during his "elite" years our line was bad. I will not get into Bully gate or Hernandez as those concerns have been already discussed, but if you can not practice with the line there is no way the unit can function well.

Pouncey finished the season at 293 lbs? Thats nuts. Way to light.

Definitely more encouraged after reading no sacks/hits given up Kilgore once Garapolo took over.

A little bird told me that the team told Pouncey he would "compete" at guard but that he was NOT going to be the starting center anymore along with asking him to take a pay cut.....FWIW

Couldn't the Phins trade him? Well, I wish him luck with the Chargers.

it's probably muscle he was losing as well. You can't keep doing squats and leg lifts with bad hips. I was worried about that more than anything.

We owe the 49ers a big thank you for them coming to us. Its sad when other teams realize miami has a need that wasn't going to be fixed, and they fix it for us to save themselves some money. Good article. I love the oline overhaul.
1. Pouncy gone allows Sitton here
2. Interior line practices together.
3. Pouncy injury inevitability
4. Better run game
5. Cheaper cap hit
6. Getting Kilgore through a painless trade

Any one reason would be an improvement, add them all up and it's a no brainer

Other than the money, I have a hard time believing we won't miss Pouncey. And people above calling him "trash" is ridiculous. He gave 8 years of body and heart to this organization and city. Show some respect.

This may all work out in the end.. or it may not. But here's my issue

If this scenario is true. . Why wasn't our personnel and coaching staff looking at ALL OPTIONS BEFORE GETTING THAT CALL? Why weren't they considering all of the things that made them make the trade and then cut Pouncy BEFORE San Fran came calling at 11:00 at night? If they thought moving on from Pouncy would make them better (for whatever reasons) and save them money at the same time.... WHY weren't we calling SAN FRAN after they signed the other guy to a big money deal to gauge their interest? Seems to be more reactive than proactive and I don't like decisions made in haste. I really hope it all works out.
