I know there is 3-4, 4-3, and there is also 46 defense. Do u think Miami could benefit from a 46 defense??? Imagine:

D-line: Carter, Holliday, Traylor, Taylor

LB: Seau, Crowder, Thomas, Roth, Spragan, Pope.

WOW

if we had better coverage LB's then sure. but we couldn't possibly do that. If and when shulters gets situated, maybe. But i can't imagine being able to cover anything out of that package.

LOL ... I cant believe he even posted that. Peyton Manning would throw 13 TD's by the game was over ...

That being said, the 46 is a very effective defenses for some defenses ...

Yeah defenses with shutdown corners and coverage line backers.

Yeah .. mostly cover linebackers. I personaly dont think the Ravens will do as good this year with the 64 ... I dont see Ray Lewis being able to keep up with some of the faster TE's or even WR's.

Its not called the 46 because there are 4 DL & 6 LB's. Though I probably shouldn't give Bill Belichick any ideas. LOL.

It is based off the 4-3. The Center and 2 OG's are covered by DL. 1 DE is lined up outside the Weakside OT. The WLB then lines over the Weakside OT but at typical depth. The MLB is where he normally is. The SS & SLB are on the line of scrimmage. The SS is between the ORT & TE. The SLB is lined up like the DE on the other side.

It was named the 46 because the SS (Fencik?) wore that number when he played with the Bears who implemented this D under Buddy Ryan back in the mid to late 80's.

It will be interesting to see how the Ravens utilize it this season.

FWIW, The Football for dummies book by Howie Long and Football for Idiots by Theisman (how appropriate) have diagrams of how the personnel are aligned.

then you obviousy have not seen the Ravens play this preseason. This D fits their personnel perfectly, because all of the LBs have fantastic speed, unlike ours, and Ed Reed is out there playing centerfield

I dont know whether to laugh or just shrug it off ... pre-season bro ... pre-season!!

In the pre-season Rob Johnson looked like the next Joe Montana ... didnt quite work out like that did it?

Watch the Ravens D this year ... watch how many long TD's they will be burned with due to the 64 ...

Pretty much 100% correct ... and the only defense I have personally seen in my life-time run the 46 to perfection is the Ravens defense of their super bowl year ...

Here is a pic of the 46 ----> http://www.endzone.it/images/uploads/articoli/bears46def2.jpg

And the problem is that the OLB have to be able to rush the pasher, contain in case of a run, or drop into coverage in case of a pass.

It is just to difficult to run

they're not going to run the 4-6 all the time. Rex Ryan is a 4-3 guy. They will still be playing nickel and dime packages. They will not be going to the 4-6 exclusively. Just like we're not going to the 3-4 exclusively
