Ok guys I like the off season rumors and draft questions and what ifs as much as the next guy. I just want to ask a little x and o question for those of you who are up on it. I would like to know the difference between say the STEELERS 3-4 defense and our 3-4 version(Parcells). Maybe it is just me but it seems as if the steelers always seem to have about 9 men blitzing and 9 more in coverage. I would love to see us do more of the zone blitz stuff this year. I was just wondering how our 3-4 differs from say the Pats or the Steelers and even the Jets?

I dont think its much different other than the fact that i believe the steelers and pats usually show blitz more often and give offenses more looks in being deceptive, so in a nut shell i think they bring maybe there safety down to show blitz, or so i think.

It's about personnel.. they blitz because they have a lot of good blitzers..we didn't, so we had to be careful..plus the backend has to be a rock in man to man..if the blitz didn't get there, you needed heady guys in the backend, we got hurt a lot becaue blitzers didn't get there quick enough or force the throws early enough..i.e., why Wade and more will be on the team this year.

The difference is the Steelers have the playmakers to blitz in a 3-4 and have been playing in a 3-4 a lot longer than Miami. The Steelers have really done a great job at finding great playmakers on the defensive side of the ball a la Troy Polamalu, Lamarr Woodley, and James Harrison just to name a few. I really think it starts in the trenched with Casey Hampton and the other two big DEs who take up blockers and allow the LBs to make plays. We both have a LB driven defense, but the LBs are best when the front three do their job well.

Our defense will be better next year despite the departure of Goodman because our front three will be better. Roth and Crowder also have another year of 3-4 LB experience as well. Look for our FO to bring in more talent at LB and Cameron Wake will be used a lot in passing situations. It will take time for our D to become elite, but we have the right guys in Ireland and Sparano to replenish the ranks for years to come.

the steelers have a super hard defense to learn the dolphins dont... have as complicated as one.. because its a new system with fresh players to it the more they play it the more plays will be added to it

Not really, the Steelers have been using the same D for years and have fine tuned it by acquiring the right players for their system. We on the other hand are trying to find the right ones, ie: we need pass rush LB's that can cover, or a safety that can handle a TE 1 on 1 and still be effective on run support and the blitz. IMHO with time and player aquisition you will see a D that is very similar to what the Steelers ( or Cowboys, Patsies and other teams run). The right people make all the difference and we have had 3 or 4 different systems in the last 5 years, all wanting to something a little different.

no... the dolphins had pretty basic schemes on d this year and the players even said how simple it was, the steelers on the other hand was a different story..

I am pretty sure it was kept simple due to the personel(spelling) we had in place. Plus it was the 1st year we truly swtiched over.

Once we get more players that fit the scheme and have a year more running the 3/4 you will see more and more blitzes and complicated schemes.

Steelers bring Zone blitz and they move the blitzer around but their is a empty Zone in the defence . the problem is most Qb cannot read and react. Here the not only QB but also his WR needs to read and the WR need to redirect to the empty zone.

In 2007 season T.J.whoisyourmama was a talker during playoff and welker .He said from what tape he has seen welker success was he does not get play called for him. He lines up and runs to where empty zone and seam`s are . Brady hits him all the time as wes is readying and picking empty zones.

Patriots run a bit difference defence but during the SB era they were blitz a tonne but do not use zone blitz but depend on the DL and OLB generating pressure. the problem is it take a split second more but their is no empty zone or seams. Now with older players the time increased but look for it to back this year as the patriots .

The Steelers 3-4, as well as the Cowboys under Wade Phillips, differs from Parcells version is it's aggressiveness. Dick LeBeau and Wade Phillips wants offenses to adjust to what they are doing defensively while Parcells adjust to what the offenses are doing.

If you listen to what the Cowboys players who have played in both the Parcells version and the Phillips version, they prefer the later. Here's a pretty good article on about it.
Cowboys' 3-4 looks the same, but it's not Big Bill's anymore

RVING, Texas — Nothing really looks different when Dallas Cowboys defenders get set for a play. Basically, the same players from a year ago are lining up in the same spots.

Then the ball is snapped and it becomes very clear - this isn't Bill Parcells' 3-4 defense anymore.

"Nah, it's totally, totally different," linebacker Bradie James said. "You see the smiles. I think you can see from our body language, we're actually having fun."

While the base formation hasn't changed, new coach Wade Phillips brings an attacking philosophy with his 3-4 defense. Phillips adjusts the scheme to fit the players, freeing them to make plays instead of forcing them into set roles that can shackle them.

"You've got an opportunity to move around and run places and not have to worry about technique all the time," Marcus Spears said. "You're just trying to get in gaps, stunt and make plays."
Spears and Chris Canty each had only one sack while starting on opposite ends last season. That's because they were forced by Parcells' system to read or react instead of attack and often got stuck at the line of scrimmage dealing with offensive tackles or tight ends.

"There's a lot more opportunity," Spears said. "You may not make a tackle, but if you've pushed your guard back or put the tackles three yards in the backfield and the running back has to bounce and somebody else tackles him for a loss, you're pretty much affecting that play. That's what this scheme is."
One of the reasons the Steelers look like they are sending more players than they actually are is because of their zone blitz scheme invented by Dick LeBeau 20 years ago. Here's what Duece Lutui and Levi Brown had to say about the Steelers defense before the Super Bowl. http://www.nfl.com/superbowl/story?template=without-video&id=09000d5d80e79a9b
"It can be confusing, especially when they're doing a lot of pressures to come after Kurt Warner," Arizona guard Deuce Lutui said.
"What makes it a good 3-4 team is that they're a much older and experienced team than us. They've played and meshed well together and they've been to the big show before with mostly the same players. Their experience makes them a great defense. Their scheme has shown to stop real good offenses. We're a young front. We're a really good offense collectively, but this line is young. It will be a good challenge."
"The main difference with Pittsburgh, more than any other team, is their personnel," Cardinals tackle Levi Brown said. "They've got guys who know the scheme and don't get out of position. Some of the time, in a 3-4, players don't play gaps the way they are supposed to and that opens up lanes to run and pass. They've got guys that hold blocks and fall in gaps, a great linebacking corps and a secondary that gets the job done in coverage and makes the quarterback hold the ball."

When we blitz do we zone behind it or do we play mostly man?
Mostly man-to-man with some zone thrown in to mix up the coverages in an attempt to slow the QB read and throw off the timing to his receivers.

Thanks geforce now that is the kind of football talk that I enjoy. Maybe we should have an x's and o's forum on this board.

with all due respect to Pasqualoni, Lebeau is the Don Shula of DC's

if he had chosen a team other than the Bengals, I think he would be a HC right now
