Mat McBriar, P, Hawaii
McBriar has the strongest of any punter to enter the draft in the last five years. Also shows outstanding hang time. He grew up playing Australian Rules football in East Brighton, Australia. Chargers punter Darren Bennett told Hawaii coach June Jones, who had previously coached the Chargers, about McBriar. Jones did not have a scholarship for McBriar but took him on as a walk-on. McBriar did not rank amongst the top punters nationally in '02 because Hawaii, with an aggressive pass-happy offense, only punted 48 times all season. McBriar would have ranked fifth -- 44.8 yards per punt -- if he had enough attempts. His leg is unquestionably the strongest in this draft, and he continues to improve in every other area. He could be drafted as high as the fifth round.
