Our defense are good at 2 things..Against the Run and Against the Pass.
I think that the more a team runs the ball, the better we get at run stoping, but by the time they start throwing it, we give up chunks..vise versa.. we dominate both at times, but not at a consistent level. It's always one or the other. but that other, loses the game for us...Thats why we have to stuff the run and stuff the pass, otherwise were in for a long one.

Three things.

You forgot the running of the mouth.

By the way, we are absolutely atrocious against the pass. I don't know what games you've been watching.

Truth.

And the only reason we're "statistically" good against the run is because teams rarely run on us because we're so awful against the pass.

Exactly. I remember years back it was the same thing only reversed. We were rated as one of the top pass defenses but only because we were dreadful against the run.

I don't think it's that bad though. It seems we give up some yardage on the ground near the beginning of games but we either tighten up, or teams just start going to the air to take advantage of where we really suffer. I still think we're an above average run defense though, just not as good as the stats show. It's definitely skewed.

Your post doesn't make sense... we need to stop the run and stop the pass and then we'll be good?

Duh.

Our defense is VERY weak in the middle. We get no pressure on the quarterback and our LB's are mediocre at best. In fact, our best LB - Jason Taylor - is not a run stopper by any means.

Our front 7 sucks and we can't cover tight ends because our safeties are not exactly coverage specialists. Our corners have potential for the future, but right now, they are still rookies. Our depth at corner is also a concern - Nate Jones being our nickle back is scary.

Our rush defense is average at best... we're not terrible but we're not top5, either. I see too many guys gashing us for big chunks of yards.

We need better personnel across the front 7 and more time for our rookies in the secondary.

This is a blanket statement that is just wrong in my opinion.

Starks
Fergy
Langford
Merling

These guys don't suck. We probably have one of the better D Line rotations in the league when you add in Solai and McDaniel to the group above.

Our linebackers, well that's a different story. Porter has been hurt and regardless he has not imposed any fear on QB's to date. Time to move on from him in 2010. JT has been solid and the biggest playmaker on Defense. Definitely not the JT of old, but solid as a SOLB. Crowder is not a team captain and force in the middle. We need to upgrade there. He would be so much better if we was next to an elite run stopper. This way they could use him more in pass coverage (zone schemes rather than man to man on a TE). Torbor and Ayodele are rotational guys, neither should be starting if you can help it.

So basically, I think we do have some holes in our LB corp, but our D Line is very solid and in my opinion one of the better units in the league. Teams have picked up big chunks on the ground b/c our LB's can't get off blocks. The times when we stuff a guy for a 1 or 2 yard gain (or even loss) is when those Ends and Tackles blow through their blocks and get pressure. It's happened quite often which is surpising for a 3-4 defense. Those Ends and Tackle should be just trying to occupy as many blockers as they can and instead they are actually getting penetration.

We need new linebackers or at least a new MLB (move Crowder to replace Ayodele) and have Wake and Roth in a rotation and WOLB.

:ponder: Havent watched ANY Dolphins games this year huh..

So basically you need a defense

qmar, of course you think our D Line is one of the better units in the league - you're a Dolphins fan.

But you want to blame and inability to get any pressure on the quarterback COMPLETELY on the linebackers? The linebackers suck, but the DL gets no pressure on the quarterback, either. I know in a 3-4 the DL is primarily used for run stopping (which we have NOT been great at, by the way) but in obvious passing downs there is NO EXCUSE for not getting pressure on the quarterback in a four man front.

Ferg is a very good run stuffer, not a pass rusher.

Langford is better against the run than he is the pass (though he is a good player).

Merling? Merling is up and down some games I wont see him at all.

Starks is our only consistent player on the front line and out of the front 7 entirely.

Out of the 4 you listed I'll give you Langford and Starks. Ferguson is good for run defense and is on his way out. Solai is average at best and McDaniels is still a non factor. Just because we rotate in other guys does not make them as good as our starters. We're trying to develop them, but as of right now, our depth is not necessarily a strong suit, IMO. Hopefully Wake starts to get some playing time and fast because we need to get some QB pressure.

Ya, I'll repeat it again: when it comes to getting pressure on the quarterback, our front 7 sucks (other than Starks).
