If we really look at this last game against the pats, how close are we really? This team needs a lot of work, we got beat by a bunch of 2nd and 3rd teamers. We had all of our so called best players on the field and we got beat by NE's backups. So how close are we? One of our best players, Chambers, was given a chance to make a play on NE's 3rd string CB, This should be cake right? 5'9 backup db against 6'0 38inch verticle #1 WR? We had the right play called but our #1 guy got beat by thier #3 guy. So I ask you again how, how good are we?

Another case in point, One of our starting CB (at the beginning of the season), has a chance to make a play against their 3rd or 4th WR and our guy again gets beat, This team is simply not good enough and is actually 3 years away from being good enough. We need new DB's (3) New WRs, (2) New DL (3) (due to age) New LB (2) (age) and a QB. And depending on who you ask we may also need a couple of OLinemen. So how long will it take us to get all of these players in here and teach them the system and how to play together? you guy's or girls tell me?

could be as soon as two years for a real team to be put together though if he gets the key positions fixed next year we could be competitive and playoff bound in 2006. in 2007 if all goes well we could challenge in the championship game

I guess I could agree with that, But saban would have to hit on almost every draft pick next year and would have to bring some quality free agents. Won't be easy to get it done in 2 years I think 3-4 would be more realisitic

We are 3 players away from being a legit playoff team. Like I said in another thread, how many games have we lost because of either horrible QB, or CB play??? The answer is almost all of them(KC is the only game we really got pushed around) We were in every other game so far this year and had a chance to win it at the end. Get a QB, and 2 good DB's and we are an instant playoff team. Now the only question in my mind is how long will it take to get a good QB??? There's two ways it can happen, either A:.......They get a free agent or trade for one(Rivers/Kitna) or B:.........Draft one and wait for him to develope which will take SEVERAL years. So in short....... this team is as close to winning as it is to getting a quality starting NFL ready QB.

The was the NFL is now, you can go from last to first in 2 years but things just have to go right for you in free agency and the draft. Is hard to tell at this point how long is gonna take.We have a great RB, the o-line is getting better and we have some youngs guys on defence that could develop.Crowder,Daniels,Roth,Wright,Vickerson and Poole just to name a few.We need 2 more impact players on defence and 2 more on offence(QB,WR)and we're on our way imo.

Ozzy rules!!

I can't say I agree with you here buddy. The DB's or QB did not lose the NE game Chris chambers did. He had the tying touchdown in his hands and dropped it. nobody's fault but his. Wait a minute, I' take that back, if howard makes the damn INT the game is over, so I think its more howards fault. But at any rate, Chambers is supposed to be our #1 guy so we expect him to make plays in crunch time over 3rd string corners right? Howard on the other hand did exactly what we expected him to do, because he is not our #1 guy he's our 4th guy, so he gets a pass. My point is that our starters are not good enough to beat a good team's backups, so how will we beat a good team's starters? I don't see it happening on a consistant basis with this team.

I agree with you on one point though, we definantly need a QB. But by the time we get one and he developes, this current team especially defense will be old, so thats why I say we need a lot of work

Agreed...3 to 4 years is more realistic. The bigger question is, will we fans want to wait that long? I already see rediclous threads calling for Saban's head and saying things like he sucks.

Judging from last weeks game I'd say 3 years. We need help in too many positions. WR is a must as is CB, S, DL, and QB, I haven't even mentioned OL. About the only position we are all set at is RB. Our LB's are old too. Next year we go 8-8, maybe after that we go to the playoffs. This franchise has always teased the fans regarding Super Bowl only to be let down year after year!! I'll believe it when I see it.

I know. In the offseason noosy expected this team to be a big winner and now that they are losing, kind of like we all expected, people are calling for the coaches head. Did I miss something??? Were most poeple lying when the said the fins were some years away????? I'm dissapointed because I always want to win but also believe in giving people a chance. No football coach is a miracle worker. JJ or Wanny couldn't win with these core players so what makes us thing Saban can??

Your post makes sense, nfl teams can turn it around in a hurry, but the majority of the teams that did that did not have Dave and speilman drafting players. My point is most other teams have the youg players on the roster that allows them to develope and mature while still being affordable, We on the other hand have to pretty much start from scratch. We had no quality young talent with the exception of Pool on the roster before Saban got here so saban has to basically start from scratch. This will in my opinion lengthen the process

I agree homie

I think 2 more years is a realistic hope for a turn around. By that time the team will be stocked with mostly Saban picks and players. If the team doesn't show drastic improvement within the next two years then it is time to start questioning whether or not Saban is a quality NFL coach.

So what would qualify as drastic improvement?

2-3 years at best....just too many needs and too many old players...to replace them all in less time. It takes rookies a year to learn a system...and at least that time for a new QB....If we get a new QB.

We have a few holes, but don't forget we should have some serious cap room this off-season too. So another successful draft + a couple of key free agents and we are looking at a playoff team. It all depends on how some of the rookies this (and next) year develop.
