Dolphins | Capers will not be given defensive coordinator title
Wed, 12 Jul 2006 18:50:56 -0700
Barry Jackson, of the Miami Herald, reports the <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/22/nfl">Miami Dolphins will not give special assistant Dom Capers the title of defensive coordinator, but that essentially is his job with the team. The Dolphins save cash that way, causing the Houston Texans to pay Capers $2 million in 2006 and the Dolphins only $300,000.

How did we get an ex-headcoach and one of the brightest defensive minds in all the land for just $300,000. Sucks for the texans, we literally "stole" from them.

The source is KFFL.

yup, so it seems! I'm not complaining, let's wait and see how he does! :)

Saban knows how to handle that paper.

Damn smart business on Phins part. And don't think for a minute that the Texans wouldn't have done it the same way if the shoe were on the other foot.

Capers won't be here long, thats part of the reason he was willing to do it.

It has to do with language in his Texan's contract. If he were hired and given the "DC" title, the Fins would have to pay his entire salary. He is actually being paid by the Texans ($2.3 m). To get him, we paid the $300K per his Texan contract, and the Texans are responsible for the remaining. It's a shrewd move, as much by Mr. H as by Saban...when the Texan's contract expires, (I'm not sure if it is 2007 or 2008) we will have to negotiate a contract to keep him. I am not sure of the exact language, but that is basically how it works...The Texans had to "buy out" his contract and the language in it also states how and who is responsible for his salary once they terminated his services there.

dang...were gunna end up teaching everyone how to run the Miami olphin defense... who's job will Dom get next year...swap out with Jeff like Utah suggests ??

I can't see Capers leaving after this year for a head coaching spot. I don't think any team is willing to let him be the coach. The guy is a great defensive mind, but he's had ONE winning season in the 8 years he's been a head coach. I think he'll be on as our defensive coordinator for atleast a couple of years.

Yeah, I don't think Dom Capers is another Scott Linehan situation.

Linehan was a hot name. Fresh blood.

People have seen Dom Capers already. I think he's here for at least two years.

im very interested to see what he brings to our defense. im almost as excited about capers himself as i am about jason allen

Yeah, I agree I think Dom will be a DC for mostly the rest of his career. If he can re-establish his name he might get some looks in 2-3 years. I do think though that Mike Mularky will be somewhere else this time next year. I guess I'm saying that thinking he does OK in Miami.
