Let me start by saying that under normal circumstances, drafting Jason Allen at 16 is not a bad pick... In fact it's a very good one based on his potential and how it fills such a need on our defense.
That being said, when there is a potential franchise LT on the board in a guy like Winston Justice, I really don't see how we couldv'e possibly passed on him. I had him going #10 overall to Arizona before Leinart fell to them and I heard a lot of people say that Justice was not a much worse prospect than D'Brickashaw. This guy probably couldv'e come in and started for us at left tackle from day one and given us bookend tackles for years... LJ Shelton is pretty much fat and useless judging from his play in previous years.
I still support the pick of Jason Allen, and I hope he tears it up in the secondary for us from day one, but I still don't understand how we passed up a top 10 caliber prospect that would have also filled a big need for us. Priority #1 should be keeping Culpepper upright in the pocket, and HEALTHY. I'll eat a lot of crow if Joe Toledo lives up to his physical potential and starts for us at some point, this year or next, but I wouldv'e liked to have seen the draft go like this...
Rd 1 - Winston Justice
Rd 3 - Best d-back available (was Ko Simpson there?)
Rd 4 - Brandon Marshall

Ok I'll have to double check my facts, BUT Marshall was gone by the time we picked in the 4th.

IT is always easy to second guess the picks in the Draft. You never know who is going to be great. Even on this, we have to wait. Who knows, everyone we picked on this weekend could end up a star. OR all could be a bust...

Nope, just checked now... Simpson was there in the 3rd, Marshall was there in the 4th... Eh whatever we had a good draft but IMO a draft of Justice, Simpson and Marshall wouldv'e been better.

obviously enough teams thought so little of Justice that he didn't even get picked in the first round. Olinemen in the first are not guarunteed to be good anyways, they actually have a pretty high failure rate. Picking OL in the first is a waste of a pick IMO.

On top of that we already have three starting tackles on our roster however bad you think they are. Possibly getting a fourth in Pearson. We also have a developmental prospect in Alabi. Additionaly you would have to think that Houck had Toledo targeted from the start since he was picked in the 4th and none of us heard of him before.

As for passing on top 10 calibre player, if Jason Allen came out last year he would have been a top 10 selection according to alot of draft experts.

Maybe Saban did not like the fact that Justice got arrested for possession and soliciting a prostitute...

If you look at Hudson Houck's past, he was never given the top rated OTs. In the 1st round, you take your most impact skilled player. Houck has been able to turn middle round talent into a good starting Olineman. Dont be suprised if in a few years Alabi is our starting LT with Carey at RG and Toledo at RT. Alabi and Toledo are the type of players that based on the past I think Houck should be able to turn into solid starters, not superstars.

Obviously no matter where you, I or Mel Kiper had Justice rated, he was not a player Nick Saban had as one of his top 12 or 13 elite prospects, as evidenced by the fact that he said they really didn't even consider drafting Justice at 16. Remember that one of the coaches from USC came to coach under Saban and I'm sure his opinion was considered, as well as Hudson Houcks.

Jason Allen is a player Saban had on his elite list.

Until he proves otherwise, I have to trust Sabans evaluation on Justice that he wasn't worth the pick.

Easy to say who we should have picked after the fact.

I thought it was more absurd that we passed on Manny Lawson...the guy I've been saying for awhile now

Who thought Simpson was going to fall to the 4th? I think going FS/CB in the 1st round was very smart. The only other position that I would have been ok with would have been OLB/DE like Manny Lawson or Wimbley if he woulda been there. Jason Allen should step in and start at FS for us next season. Or possibly move Daniels to FS and start him at CB.

The fact that Justice plummeted in this draft is enough to tell me that if we took him at #16 it would have been foolish.. 32 teams cant be wrong

Another thing that should be considered here is that we have a quarterback that needs to be kept up in the pocket and kept as safe as possible so his fragile knee doesn't become shredded again. If we keep Culpepper healthy and give him time to throw wer'e going to have a serious offense and win a lot of games. Are we going to be able to do that with LJ Shelton at LT? I doubt it.

While I agree with your conclusion, the logic you used to get there is faulty. After all, the draft shows every single year that 32 teams are wrong quite often. Every time a 2nd or later pick becomes a star they show us that.

We know now that Nick doesn't draft the BPA. He drafts the BPAFOS (Best player available for our system).

justice will be a better tackler than ferguson justice has way better technique and feet

but i prefer playmakers cause we have an ot already he just needs to do open a hole thats why we got a great rb you just cant depend on the oline to do you everything for you *cough* denver
