It happened too many times last year. Opposing teams with 4 WR and a back coming out of the backfield. Coverage is good until, QB runs through a "grand canyon like" hole right up the middle. This cost us a few games last year and you can beleive teams like the Texans (we can't seem to beat them) will use it. The first couple of times I saw it I said " That was so obvious that for sure the next time somebody tries that we will make them pay".
Never happened, The Ravens even did it to us in the playoffs. I am thinking (and it hurts) that upgrades to the defensive line that the rush will be so much more agressive with JT back that the RB will not get out of the backfield in time to take our LB out of position. What do fellow fin fans think? It was an obvious problem last year that really didn't get talked about on this board last season, but still was painfully an obvious problem.

giving up the middle on a QB draw like against houston and the Rats is really nothing more than bad playcalling. when teams are close to the endone there is no reason whatsoever to call a play that leaves the middle of the field wide open. either that or get a smarter middle backer who knows better and can make adjustments

Agree. Either the playcall was very horrible on that last Houston TD, or Crowder just abandoned his responsibilities and went to double cover a slot guy.

The coaches had a full offseason to study film and realize this problem as have our opponents. With that, I fully expect our coaches to address the situation and hopefully they do not make the same mistake this year. Look to see a spy in the form of a DT or a MLB in short goal line spread formations.

hmmmm...you wouldn't be talking about Crowder taking himself out of the middle in that play against the Texans last year would you? you know, the one that allowed Schaub to pretty much walk right through the middle of our Defense to score that TD and win the game for them?

I think it was more than bad play calling... In the texans game I think it was a blown assignment off a misread... I haven't seen the play in a long while but it would be interesting to see what Houston's OL were doing and discover whether it was a designed run or Schaub took off. Anyone remember?

I'm pretty sure he just ran with it... but it might have been a pass-QB draw option where the linemen were told to be prepared for a draw in case there was an opportunity.

NFL did anatomy of a play for that TD. Schaub says it was a designed QB draw.

From the video I can see that Crowder and Bell are the two inside guys and both move out wide just before the ball is snapped. Look slike Starks had a shot at Schaub, but it was pretty much wide open. I think Crowder could have accomplushed his inside responsibilities if he lined up a little further inside. Same goes for Bell. I think it was 50% the players fault and 50% the play calling. Hopefully they get it fixed for next year.

Looks like a bad play call. Shouldn't we have had a spy in the middle just for that?

you never know they could of asked starks and fergy to hold their ground in the middle..
They could of got pushed to the sides and most the flack should go to them.
If you remember the texans were killin us through the air and its not like they were on the 2 or 4 yard line.. Id have to say playcall

Don't get me started on this play again. :D

Clearly Crowder was motioned by Hill to step over and help out in double coverage on the WR.

If Crowder had good awareness he would have called a time out. Instead he vacates his area and leaves a gaping hole up the middle.

I was standing in my living room screaming time out (Not that it helps) then Schaub went right up the middle.

It still pisses me off!

i am not worried about one play.but it will take one more year of free agents, and the draft to fix this problem.i feel we are still weak up the middle on both sides.we have depth at defensive back and defensive end for next year.outside in for bp.nose tackles, inside lb's and guards next year.the plan is coming together.
