I have been reading several posts lately stating that Chad Henne or Pat White are good QB's because they throw a nice deep ball. Is that really what defines the "best" quarterback - Finding ways to win games or putting up 400yds

A good quarterback shows poise while getting hit, he must be able to think on his feet, think ahead of the defense, be able to recognize his defense, know where his receiver is going, he doesn't even need to have a rocket arm, he just needs to complete passes. But most of all he MUST trust his teammates to help him out on each snap.

The most important that Henne and White will have to show is poise under pressure and while getting hit....

lookin at your avatar of fiedler on his knees brings back just great memories.

A good qb can not only get his team to the playoffs but win those games as well.

A good quarterback was Trent Dilfer who didn't lose games while his teammates won games. Dan Marino was a great quarterback. End of discussion.

To me the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time) QB was Montana. Not the best arm. Took care of the ball, could win the tough games. Worked with a running game effectively (I admire Dan Marino but I feel that was a weakness in his game). Rings, baby, rings. Did Walsh play a part of those rings? Yes. But he wouldn't have had any without the QB.

11. Anticipation

12. Field Vision / Awareness

...and finally...

13. Anticipation

These are the tangible things that I look for in a quarterback...I can't stress enough how important anticipation is IMO for a quarterback at the NFL level...you can't wait for wide open receivers...you have to be able to read the defensive players and anticipate when your receiver is going to be open...

I define a good QB as... Chad "Thrown to the curb by the Jets to go turn around a franchise, in favor of favre" Pennington.

i believe a good qb is penny smart reads ds makeing the right decisions in all situations and accurate, basically it comes down to doing the right thing at the right time. a great qb is all that with a strong arm ie peyton.

I think in only mentioneing Henne and White you have overlooked the real key to this argument... Pennington.

Obviously the rocket arm debate has been done to death here in the zillion 'Penny vs Henne' threads but anyone claiming that a rocket arm is the fastest way to a Super Bowl is only analyzing half the picture. If this was the case the position would be the easiest to draft... Take the guy with the Cannon, plan the parade.

As it is, QB is the HARDEST position to draft which demonstrates the number of intangibles and variables the position encompasses.

If anyone has ever played the position they understand the sheer volume of information these guys must process in the walk from the huddle to the LOS... This position is far more about the 'head' than the arm... A rocket arm should be considered a luxury while a smart QB is an absolute necessity.

I am always surprised at how little love Pennington gets on here simply for lack of arm strength... I would have thought that last season was a great example of how effective a game 'management' style QB can be in this game.

Obviously if you put Marino's arm on Chad you would have... well... Marino. But the fact is, the things that Chad brings to the table are harder to find than a muscle'y' arm...

IMHO our QB situation is perfect right now, not because Henne has shown such incredible talent... but because he has the other 'Chad' in front of him. Henne has the chance to become a complete QB with the stronger arm with a guy like Penny to learn from. Let's also remember that Pennington has embraced the 'mentor' role instead of being threatened by the Chad behind him... Class.

As to the argument that a Pennington 'Style' QB is limiting the team... I would argue that we would be far more limited if we had a QB with a million dollar arm and 2 cent head.

I'm going to tell you, I completely agree. There are 2 things that are MOST important IMO. Smarts and Accuracy. If you can a QB that can read a defense and make adjustments as needed. Thats same QB can put the ball anywhere that he wants within 25 yards. You have a very hard QB to stop. Arm strength and running ability are luxuaries. One other thing the guy must have is a great leadership ability. He has to be able to go in there and take command of that huddle and lead his team.

Thank you!

It helps having a solid team around you. Judging based soley on wins, Aaron Rodgers is a garbage QB, but I'd take him over most of the starting quarterbacks in the NFL.....including Pennington.

A good QB wins games, but there is alot more to it than that. The coaching staff and front office must try and build a team around their guy. Meaning, they draft a guy who fits their system and style of play on offense, which in reality goes for all personel on the team. Another big factor is a good O-Line. If a young QB gets thrown in with little help up front, they face taking a beating, which can be detremental to a QB development.

Intangibles are also very important. This would include mental strenght, leadership and work ethic. Knowing how to deal with pressure situations, respectful actions on and off the field, how to react when your team goes behind and how to deal with adversity, etc.

Guys like Manning, Brady, Marino, etc would succeed anywhere because they are elite players who have elite skills and fantastic intangibles. Most guys though need to play in the right system and have a good O-Line to be successful.

I don't like the whole a good QB wins games thing people are throwing around. A good team wins games. A good QB makes good throws, decisions, plays, ect.... IMO Marino was the greatest QB ever, but he never won the superbowl. Was it because he wasn't a good enough QB? No it was because his team was never good enough to win it.
The problem is a QB can lose a game for you, but the QB can not win the game by himself. If you have crappy reciever that cant get open, no running back, no offensive line. It doesn't matter how good the QB is.

A good QB is one that does what he is asked and isn't a liability to the team. A good QB can be trusted, but really isn't asked to get outside of his comfort zone. Great QBs are ones that redefined what the team does. Great QBs can be trusted to push himself and others beyond normal limits.
