How do you record Dolphin games from cable and put them on your PC?

If you have a home made PVR system that you use to record the games, what type of hardware/software setup do you currently use.

I'm thinking about purchasing a Hauppauge WINTV-PVR-150 tuner to record games into MPEG-2 format. Then I'll use Nero recode to transfer them to a format that the Sony PSP can handle.

I have that exact card in my PC right now. It is an excellent card. The only down side is you HAVE to record in MPEG2 format.

I bought mine about 2 years ago and the Tivo like software that came with it was pretty lacking. If you want it just to record a few shows then the package software will work for you.

If you want a full blown Tivo type application I would suggest:

Are you sure about Nero being able to recode the video to get it in PSP format? I thought Nero was a CD/DVD burning tool only.

The only reason I want the card is to be able to put stuff on my PSP so that I can watch games/shows/music videos on the go.

Sure, Nero Recode 2 does an excellent job of burning content onto the PSP flawlessly. It can handle DVD movies, mpeg files, avi files...whatever and even segments of those files if you want. I love Recode.

With the 1gb memory stick, I can fit about 4 hours worth of stuff on the PSP.

I usually use half for music though and put about 2 hours of video.

you might look into getting a cheaper Tv Tuner card than the PVR150.

Here is the crux, as I see on that decision.

PVR150 - The card itself encodes the tv signal and frees up your CPU from doing that.

Cheaper Tv Tuner - Does not have Hardware encoding and requires your CPU to handle the encoding.

So if you use your PC WHILE your recording the the PVR150 is a better choice, remember even though the PVR150 handles the encoding it still has to write the mpeg file to the hard drive. So your system will still respond slower while your loading programs from it.. etc.


If you plan to only record a few show and for the PSP only then I would suggest a cheaper TV Tuner card. I hear you can get them really cheap but I am not sure about it. It may be worth your time to look into it.

New content for the Sony PSP is rather slow coming out. It has a good line up for xmas though. In addition, there are emulators out there where you can install them on the PSP and have it emulate a nintendo box. Then you can save about 100 games on your memorystick and have access to those...if you are into old school games.

I'm just so happy with the ability to put video content on it and it looks very impressive....better than I thought it would.


I've heard so many people buy "other" branded software encoded cards that were junk that I feel I wouldn't want to go that route. In reviews I've read, many of those cards crash or the video quality is poor.

I do plan to do other stuff like play games while recording. Hopefully the pvr 150 will free up enough CPU utilization for this.

Update

I did get the PVR 150 by Hauppage and I think it is great!

The video quality on a rating of 1-5 would be a 4.
I have been able to transfer many of my TIVO recorded content to my hard drive on my PC.
I use Nero Recode 2 as previously mentioned to chop it up and serve it to my PSP. Last night I took the NFL Network game of the week and put the entire 1 hour presentation on my PSP to watch while on the subway. Picture and sound quality are fantastic!!
