How does picking up Lemon affect the cap?

Helps us a lot. Lemon is minimum salary for this year and $380,000 for next year. If he doesn't make our opening day roster, we're not on the hook for any pro-rated signing bonus because the Chargers just absorbed any of that.

With Feeley, we absorb the rest of his signing bonus immediately, which means a charge of $1.8 million against this year's cap. However, the Chargers are now responsible for the rest of his 2005 guaranteed salary, which offsets about $350,000 of that. Plus we save the $3.5 million we were supposed to pay him next year.

Essentially, we took about half of our remaining cap space this year and turned it into about twice that amount of cap savings next year.

That money is not guaranteed, if he was cut prior to opening day next year, he wouldn't see a penny of that money. Essentially we took the 1.8 mil cap hit this year vice next year. We could have restructured a current contract this year with unreachable incentives (which we will probably do with th 1.2 mil we currently have remaining on this years cap) to absorb the 1.8 mil cap hit this year anyway, so the cap hit is a non issue.
