I don't know as far as position, but it will be better than last year I think. I mean, the only ligit threat we had to get to the passer was porter. Hopefully, Taylor has enough spring in his step to provide Porter some down time. If Wake and Anderson can add a little, that will also help. Hopefully Merling comes along as well.

It may not be that much numerically better, but I think it will be from lots of different contributers, instead of just one.

Let us also not forget, Matt Roth in a brand new position, and a weight more fitting a DE then a LB got 5 sacks last year, how many will he get this year with less weight, and more experience behind him.

It's purely conjecture on my part, because I have nothing to substantiate it with, but I have a gut feeling our pass rush will be top 5.

IMO, we're playing 9 mediocre to bad OLs so that should help. Add on that the group has more than just Joey Porter to worry about and I'd think 6-10 is realistic.

Last year, we ranked 8th in sacks. I was surprised to see that the Jets ranked 7th and that the Cowboys had 8 more sacks than the Steelers. I think we have the talent to jump from 8 to 4 or 5.

Well there's obviously more to pass rush than just sacks....it's putting pressure on the opposing quarterbacks....hurries, etc....

I think it all depends on the run defense.....if you can't stop the run....you can't force teams into obvious passing situations....

You have to force teams into 3rd down passing situations to get most of your sacks....

I think the pass rush should be top 10 in effectiveness if they can consistently stop the run......but it may not be reflective in the sack department...

I think the potential is there for it to be very good. Having Taylor there as a situational or 3rd down pass rusher will be the key, as I would assume Porter will recieve double blocking, meaning Taylor will have one man to beat. Of course the question about Taylor is does he still have enough gas in the tank. But being more than likely only a situational rusher and not playing every down, I should hope fitness and burst should'nt be a problem.

Its too early to say if Wake will have enough of an impact to make a difference to our pass rush. We are all hoping that he does, but the jury is still very much out on him at the moment.

As for Roth, I think he is vital for our run defense. I understand that he was playing a new position last year and he still had five sacks, but he is still no-where near the pass rusher of a Jason Taylor. Roth is key on run defense and its good to actually have a player at OLB who can play the run as well as Roth can. But I dont expect much more from him in pass rush.

Moses and Anderson are still around also, but unless one of them totally rips it up during TC and pre-season, then I only see them fighting it out for a place on ST's or if one of the OLB's go down. Wake could also find himself in this catagory depending on his progress.

With the players we have at OLB, we should be the strongest in the division and we should improve on last year ideally. The one concern I have though is will Porter continue to slow up like he did at the tail end of last season or will Taylors presence mean that it will take a bit more pressure off Porter. Injuries will also be a key factor, but if all goes well I would be hoping on a slight improvement than last years 8. If they dont I would be happy with top 10.

If its top 5, we might be Super Bowl bound. We really need one of the second year guys (Merling or Langford) to be a big time pass rusher. If both guys can get after the QB, then we have JP and JT getting pressure and that will tremendously help the younger players in the secondary.

This defense has a chance to be incredibly special.

it depends on how healthy we are. porter won't repeat what he did last year but we got guys like taylor and wake to make up for it. not to mention roth will be better during his second year at OLB. would love to have a bunch of sacks next year but would love consistent pressure on the QB even more. our rooks in the secondary are gonna need it - plus bell and wilson are much better against the run. we were 7th last year and we all know we didn't have anywhere near enough pressure on the QB. i said 6-10.
