Seriously. We ranked among scrub teams like the Lions and Browns in every other defensive stat. What does this mean? Should we be looking for a pass rusher early in the draft like many fans and analysts think we should? What did you guys think of our pass rush this year?

Pass rush is streaky. For a team that finished so high in sacks, I remember QBs like Manning and Rivers reading the paper in the pocket.

I don't know who is saying pass rusher early in the draft I think everyone would rather have an LB, S, or WR before that

if we dont get a sack there is no pressure, hit or miss

Well basically, any game we got sacks, we would end up with 3 or 4 on the day, so they added up. The pass rush never seemed to be consistent though.

Why bother to try and run the ball when its so easy to pass. its just a numbers game.

QB pressures are more important
this is our QB pressures compared to
DeMarcus Ware who had 54 qb pressures

Merling-4
Soliai-1
Ferguson-6
Porter-11
JT----19
Akin--6
Crowder-5
Mcdaniels-3 For a total of 55 qb hurries or one more than Ware

8 players to better Ware

Wake tied for the lead with JT but spent more time on the bench than the field

That is very telling, Porter sucked, JT was "ok" at best and our best guy fby far was wake who barely played.

This is why sacks is not the key stat. Where do we rank based upon QB pressures? That stat does not lie. Many years the Ravens were not in the top 5 for sacks, but they were consistently in the top 5 for QB pressure.

Pass rush was good in numbers this year but very bad in timing.
The steeler game was a case in point. We get a sack on 1st down to create a 2nd and 11 and then on the next play we give up a 20+ yard completion. A sack in most cases should result in a punt and change of possesion. Too many times this year a sack was followed by a 20 yard play and a 1st down. This essentialy cancels out the sack. So that is why we are high in sack but low in passing defense, too many big plays that cancelled out the sacks.

There was an interview with JT in the middle of the year discussing sacks and how hard they are to get. He mentioned that you couldn't really celebrate a sack unless it was the last play of the game. Cuz even after a sack you have to go out on the next play an stop them again. If you don't the sack is wasted. We wasted to many sacks this year by allowing big plays to follow.

Same case in the Houston game. Trailing 3-0 we get a 6 yard sack on the 1st play of the second possesion. From 2nd and 16 from their own 14 yard line they complete a 16 yard pass for a 1st down. We don't even force a 3rd down attempt. Houston goes on to score a TD on this drive and take a 10-0 lead. Timing of the sacks is everything.

Good example with Peyton Manning. He was sacked 10 times all year...so I guess we weren't the only team that didn't get to him. :rolleyes2:

Well if the LB you are referring to is an OLB, that would be a pass rusher in this scheme.

We've got guys on our team that are very good at capitalizing against weaker o-lines and QBs. This is certainly best illustrated in the case of Porter and Taylor, who both have the experience and moves to get to the QB eventually but simply don't have their youthful quickness anymore, so any QB who can get the ball out in a reasonable timeframe, which is what pretty much every good QB in this league does, won't have to worry about those two.
