I thought you couldn't talk to players until free agency actually began. Thats why we have to wait to talk to Brees. If thats true how is Madison allowed to visit with the Giants?

Madison visits New York
<Mar. 7> Madison visited the Giants on Monday and took a physical, the Newark Star-Ledger reports. The defeat to Carolina in last year's playoffs exposed the team's lack of depth in the secondary.
With Will Allen likely to leave once free agency begins, Corey Webster entering his second year and Will Peterson's health uncertain, a player like Madison, 32, could be a reliable third corner and possibly a starter.

A salary-cap casualty in Miami, Madison has 31 interceptions and four Pro Bowl selections to his name.

Madison was cut. Brees was not actually cut, his contract expired. It's a tiny difference.

we released him so he can talk to anyone. The only players that we cannot talk to are the ones whose contracts expired. They are free agents when the free agency period starts and until then they belong to the their previous team.

Actually his contract expires when the league year is over which keeps getting pushed back.

Exactly, you cannot speak with a guy who is still on an active roster or that is tampering. You have to wonder about the status of a lot of guys like Kerry Collins, who apparently was cut, but then these guys are in limbo as some cuts have been rescinded. I would hate to be a GM or Capologist at this time and trying to figure out this mess.

Yea if you read the today's Herald article it says that Madison's cut is delayed until the new cut deadline & free agency starts. SO I'm guessing he's still on our team.??

No, he is not on the team anymore. The cuts that were made last Wednesday still stand. The Dolphins were going to cut him anyways even if the CBA was worked out by then.

No......the league year ends when the next one begins (sort of like Dec31-Jan01). Right now, we are still in the '2005' league year. NFL contracts expire at the end of a year, if the year ended after the Pro Bowl as you say, then all those players with expiring contracts would be able to sign then.....which we all know is not the case.

Not true. Both sides were talking on a restructure but due to the cap still being at 95 million, the team needed to pare down something like 22 million by last Sunday (although that date has been extended a couple of times already). Sam counted around 3.5 million against the cap... with the restructure, it could've probably come down another two million or so, with him counting only 1.5 million for the year. That number is one we can all accept, as he is still in the top half of CBs in the league.

If the CBA was done, the cuts we made could have been delayed enough to do the restructures and get a clearer picture of who we keep and who we cut.

My understanding was that those cut on Wednesday were not part of the free agents that could be brought back if a new CBA was agreed on, only those cut on Thursday thru Sunday...

At any rate, my guess is that Madison was told by the Fins that he won't be coming back and can pursue FA with other teams. Madison can, under this scenario, sign with the G-men, but likely both he and the G-men would wait until after the CBA is resolved before actual negotiations begin...

He can talk to other teams because he is no longer property of the Miami Dolphins. He was released from his contract, meaning he has no obligations, and Miami has no rights to his services.

Your right, the Wednesday cuts couldn't be undone.

The cuts the team made on Wed were cuts regardless of the CBA. Anyone they cared about they would have held onto like they are with Gus and waiting for definitive word.
