How Julius Thomas could impact the Dolphins offense

I see another way to ensure our rushing attack is protected...Thomas has the size and athleticism to be a concern for the opposing d's front 7...used correctly they will have to decide who to focus on...I can see great holes opening up for AJ if the focus is on Thomas...or big chunk yardage from Thomas if he is ignored or a mismatch is there....I am glad we are continuing to build respect on the offensive side of the ball even though we have glaring weakness on defense...score more points first...and build a defense in the shadows...one or two PLAYMAKERS on our defensive front 7 and we ARE formidable...IMO

Nice article, thanks Superself!

I can definitely see the appeal of the seam routes. While the examples in the links are all successful plays, we definitely see Gase's route combos clearing the way for most of those plays. Also, there are a lot of errors by defenders and great decision making by Peyton. Those Jags clips though, just poor play all around, including Thomas. We have lacked that seam threat. This is what Gase wants and we're all hoping he gets in Thomas. Guys like Donta Hightower will not like seeing those seam routes.

Hopefully the decision tree looks like this: A) defenders tightly jamming the box with big heavy defenders, we audible to a seam route to Thomas, B) defenses plays out of the box with safeties defending those seam routes, we audible to Ajayi up the middle and battering ram them. Given Stills' speed on the outside, one safety will always have an eye on him. If Thomas is successful, and I expect that to be tested a lot early, this could help Ajayi to give us sustained drives between the 20's. But, for that to work we need to find 2 good run blocking guards who can get Ajayi a lane past the DL. Fingers crossed.

Hopefully Tannehill (with another year under his belt) will be able to make these decisions. We've already seen that the previous coaches didn't trust him to do it, and Gase had to scrap the hurry-up no huddle for some reason...

Staying on the field would be great for starters!

Unless the defense keys on his presence. It was talked about today how his inability to run block keys the defense to the pass. If he is on the field, it's a pass, etc. This will not be as big an issue if we can re-sign Sims and run a base 2TE set. And then there's this...

Thomas’ own inconsistency was also a factor. When he was on the field, concentration drops proved to be an issue. Here are two examples from a 2015 meeting with Houston:

(Even when Julius Thomas did catch the ball, it looked as if he had grown sluggish in Jacksonville. He’ll have to get back down to the playing weight from his Denver days to rebound in Miami.)

But Adam Gase > Greg Olson so...we will see.

I see on the jax tape a lot of routes being run directly into coverage and more flats less vertical work than you want...i also see though a guy who can separate out of his cuts which is key

Theres no doubt hes less explosive in jax carrying around extra weight...drop the weight who cares about the run blocking and resign dion sims and this will go fine

Gase will draw up much better play calls

That being key in my mind. I just wonder if his head is even in football any more or if he is just thinking about the $$$$

Also bortles is throwing basically end over end bullets in tight spaces theyd be hard for anyone to catch

I did see one looked like bad coverage read by thomas hooking like vs zone resulting in a pick 6

If you're going to sit down and watch Thomas' games in Jacksonville, I'd love to read your opinion on Blake Bortles.

That's good to hear. I haven't seen any official numbers on the new deal yet. I see he has 3M guaranteed left on his old deal but I heard he was restructuring.

Thats what they said $3 mil guaranteed rest of it incentive based...id like to see the remaining years highly incentive based also

That reason is it takes the entire offense to execute. If even one starter whether that is a RB, TE, WR, or lineman is having trouble with the timing and communication it greatly hinders the HUNH.

It was year one in a new offense system. I expect now that everyone has had a full season of experience, the offense will continue to be built upon this year which includes the reintroduction of the HUNH.

How much weight did Thomas put on from his time in Denver to Jax?
