First off, no disrespect intended to those who think it's insane to brush off CP right now, but this thread isn't exactly aimed toward you. I'm quite aware of the lively debate about whether we should or shouldn’t abandon hope on CP -- and that debate is repeating itself on countless other threads as I write this -- but my intention here is to ask only those who ALREADY, like me, think CP is not the answer. All feel free to add in your two cents, but please try not into make this into another CP vs JH debate or whether we should even be discussing the possibility of life after CP.

That said, for those who are convinced CP is not the answer, what's next? How long do you think the Dolphins will try to squeeze some ROI on this guy? I hope the 2nd rounder they gave up doesn't cloud their judgment into NOT acting in the off-season. I would Saban has a "just-in-case" scenario planned.
The worst thing that could happen is he's kept around for another 3 years BEFORE we make a move in FA or the draft, and then we spend another 2 years breaking in another QB from scratch. Personally, I'd trade him for a third or 4th in the offseason if I could (Oak, Det?) spend his salary on signing a top 3 QB in the draft, and keep Joey around for another year while the rookie learns.

So let me get this straight...
You have already written DC off, and would take a fourth round pick for him? Then to top it off, you want to waste another season to get a 'top 3' QB ready for 2008? Because I'm sure you know if you take a QB in the top 3 he won't be sitting the bench with that salary!
The reality is that DC is simply not healed yet...Give the guy time...

Ever since we acquired both Culpepper and Harrington, I have thought that they are both interchangeable 1st string/2nd string QBs for us. I think the correct decision was made (albeit 4 weeks too late) to make Harrington the #1 guy while Culpepper gets back to 100%.

Now after Culpepper gets completely healthy, it should be evaluated on how Harrington did during his time as starter. Then a decision should be made on who's the #1 and who's the #2.

And no, I'm not saying we should have a QB by committee!

Yeah. That's my take too but the big question to me is how much is Culpepper gonna cost us next year? If his salary shoots up to 5 mill next year I'm not sure I want him here unless Saban is 100% sure Culpepper is going to light it up out there. From the way he's played this year and last that's a big if at this point. If his salary however is 2 mil or something like that, keep him around and we'll see whether he can recapture his game

:shakeno: I guess I was asking too much with this thread.
Yes that's exactly what I'm saying. I've written him off as a SB-calibre QB. I'm sure he'll get healthy and win 9, 10 games for us in the next couple years, but I don't think he's smart enough to do much else than heave it to a WR that can outjump most corners. Okay?

I remember seeing his contract when we first signed him but it has since been removed from the net. I'm pretty sure it was 7mil signing bonus 1mil this year, then it went something like 9, 13, 15 etc...

There is a huge jump next year and IMO the only way he stays is if he plays lightsout football later this season or restructures his contract.

Exactly my point. I'd much rather use the money or a young 1st rounder, or if need be, some Oline studs. Sure I'd rather keep him around for a couple more years to see if he regains that form, but deep down I don't think it'll happen, so why not dump the salary, and stock up on some 1st day picks while he still has some stock value..because when he recovers and IF he plays like he did last year BEFORE the injury, than we'll get nothin.

You think? wow, that would be interesting indeed. I hope that's the case (he either plays lights out football or is gone if he doesn't), but I have the feeling Saban is the kind of coach that will stick this out to the end, provided CP doesn't allegedly continue his alleged hissy fits

The reality is you are not going to anything for him right now. Another team will not take that salary for a qb with a recovering knee injury. Just like we only gave up a 6th rounder for Joey. We would get nothing in return for DC now...No team would give up ANY draft pick and pay him his current salary. They would just wait for us to cut him.

well, that's a fair statement. but I think there might be a market for him after next year's draft after he's recovered, and after teams needing Qbs miss out on the guys they wanted in the draft or FA
