Wanted others input on the subject.
I think it depends on the team. If your a deffensive powerhouse ten poimts can be a safe lead, but if your an offensive team you might need 21 to feel safe.

I think 17 is the marker it makes the game 3 scores and even if you have a horrible offense you can probably run a lot of the clock out before the other team gets close

I think that is a good rule of thumb.

ditto

yeah. 17 pts is a safe lead. 25 pts pretty much puts it away if your in the 2ndH.

I hate the idea of a "safe lead". It infers that a team can just fall back, stop playing agressivly and run out the clock. Teams need to play agressive for 60 minutes; pass the ball, take shots down field and do what ever it takes to get into the endzone. With that said, I think not many teams can come back from 24.

Remembering the Jets game from a couple of years ago, and also the Buffalo game this year, so I say NO lead is big enough! You should always try to score, and NO prevent defense!

The moment you as a franchise view a lead to be safe, it no longer is.

Realistically speaking, at 14 points down, depending at which stage of the game the deficit occurs, may cause the team to start to go vertical more, which definitely occurs at 21 points.

But 21 point leads evaporate all the time. Teams should never sit on leads or stop trying to score. Those are the teams that lose the leads.

Agreed. While I agree you should manage the ball well with a lead and make sure not to make any turnovers, too many teams these days will go "run run pass" for the entire second half after going up big in the first, which just ensures that if the opposing offense gets in any sort of rhythm, that by the time you start trying to open up the offense again, the opposing defense now has momentum on its side.

That's why I get sour on criticisms of "running up the score" or the Rams for attempting an onside while already up a lot of points in that one game a few years ago. What are you supposed to do, allow the opponent to get back into the game? It's one thing to attempt a TD while up 41-3 with 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Another when trying to go up 28-0 instead of 21-0.

I think it depends on he quarter you can only feel safe with like 3 min left in he fourth up by lets say 21

A 21 point lead is safe, and you should definitely sit on that lead for 2 and a half quarters.
