How much money are the Dolphins on the hook for Tua?

I wouldn't make that bet.

Why are you so confident Tua puts his life, his happiness, and his family's happiness on the line for an ultimately meaningless game?
Yes, but I would make that bet.

If you are as sure the other way… then let’s bet.

Is there a way to do a Barry Bonds type of contract renegotiation? Let's take a cap hit of $10 million over the next 15 years and take care of him and the team.
I'd rather bite the bullet all at once than deal with it for a decade and a half.

Tua got what, 45 million for this year already? Tua should walk away for real, these aren't just your typical hit in the head and get woozy concussions, dude is out there throwing up gang signs on the field. (Sorry that's not funny) but it is 100% serious.

If he does walk away, I read on a CBS article it would most likely be arbitrated and he and the team would settle on an amount. That is what I see happening
That was funny though I laughed

I’ve avoided all news outlets, maybe there is something in the contract then?
On paper, Tagovailoa's deal ties him to Miami through 2028, but it's structured in a way that he's only practically married to the Dolphins through 2025. Consider that the team can release the quarterback without absorbing a negative impact to the salary cap in 2026; a post-June 1 cut designation in that offseason would result in a dead cap charge of $47.4 million, per Over the Cap, but an instant savings of $9 million in 2026 cap space. The Dolphins can also trade Tagovailoa at any point following the 2024 season and gain cap space, which is to say, while lucrative, the quarterback's deal is actually relatively team-friendly in terms of potential "escape routes" for Miami.

The contract does include $167.2 million guaranteed, but the "guarantees" are mostly conditional. For example, if Tagovailoa is never medically cleared to return to football, he can walk away with that entire package, according to CBS Sports contributor and salary cap expert Joel Corry. So the Dolphins would be on the hook for $167.2 million, or nearly 80% of the entire four-year extension. Corry suspects that Tagovailoa will eventually be cleared from the NFL's concussion protocol, however, which means the only way the quarterback could retire is by voluntarily walking away, a la former Indianapolis Colts star Andrew Luck.

"Financially, that's gonna be tough," Corry says. "He got $93.17 million guaranteed at signing. If he's gonna walk away voluntarily, then the 2025 guarantees will void. He's got $50 million guaranteed in 2025. Do you wanna walk away from that? Retirement voids guarantees. Now, the Dolphins could honor the guarantee if they chose to. Most teams don't do that. ... It gets worse: His $42 million signing bonus is at risk. When you retire, the remaining proration of the bonus, or about $33.6 million, can be recouped."

In the end, were Tagovailoa to voluntarily retire, Corry believes the Dolphins would be unlikely to pursue a full return on the remainder of the quarterback's signing bonus. Still, given the anticipated void in guarantees, he estimates Tagovailoa would be walking away from a total of $124 million, barring some kind of drastic settlement negotiated with the team.

"If I'm him, I don't voluntarily retire immediately," Corry says. "I'm gonna buy myself more time. Typically, when it comes to being cleared to return, it's at the discretion of the team doctor. But you could be looking at a grievance situation if there's another opinion. This thing can potentially get messy."

But why are you so sure? That's what I don't understand. What's your reasoning?
I’m not SO sure. But I think it’s 80% likely… 20% chance of a retirement is pretty high all things considered. Also, those are just my made up stats. Maybe it’s more like 70-30.

The reasoning is this is his life - for you to proclaim this is “ultimately a meaningless game” is really not being cognizant that HE is just a data point in YOUR life. Football is just a meaningless game ultimately… for you.

Football is his livelihood in HIS life.

If doctors tell him he is 100% medically cleared… sorry, WHEN doctors tell him he’s 100% medically cleared, I believe he will want to continue to do what gives HIM happiness as long as he thinks it will not affect him long term.

He has $124M reasons to come back if medically cleared.
I just don't think it's worth it. He's got the signing bonus and salary. He can go to arbitration for some of the remaining. He can have his family. His life. Have a lucrative future career as an announcer. You put all that at risk by trying to play.

The juice isn't worth the squeeze if I'm him.

I put this in another thread but I wondered if we were liable to pay his guaranteed if we could spread it out over 10-15 years. Similar to the infamous Bobby Bonilla agreement in baseball.

You are not him though and you are looking at it through your own eyes as someone who doesn’t want Tua to be the QB of this team anyway.

Football has been his whole life, I think he will find it very hard to walk away when he knows that the injury was his fault and entirely preventable.

No

I don't think Tua will want to walk away from this team, this coach and football. I could be wrong, and if he does choose to retire, I'll respect and understand his decision. But based off everything I know about him, I don't think that will be the case.

At this point Tua may have some PTSD from this and may never be the same mentally, imagine him taking another snap this year and/or next year.....everyone will be cringing, and I suspect Tua will too and that's reasonable.

do you think any sane person is going to walk away from 120 million dollars?
Unless a doctor says, you are clear to play but 1 more hit will kill you, no one is walking away on their own.
1. He leaves on his own - Leave money on the table. - NOT HAPPENING
2. Doctors do not medically clear him - He gets all the money - Could happen
3. Doctors Medically clear him. The team does not cut him. This comes down to the team drafting a QB as early as possible and bringing him along behind tua. if tua goes down again, they have a legit back up. We play him with the expectation that he is going to get hurt again but we are not relying on him to be their all 17 games
4. Doctors medically clear him, Team cuts him. I know the broncos did it, i dont see this happening. MAYBE if grier is gone, but if grier stays hes not cutting tua
5. Doctors Medically clear him, team benches him in an attempt to get him to retire. Bad look on the dolphins. Players assoication would get involved. NOT Happening.

Regardless, #1 is not happening so the dolphins are on the hook for the money and we are Cap screwed for the next 3-4 years.
