QB- Tanny- he got better in some areas. Had more yards and TD's this season but he also had Wallace to help him out9plus Gibson for a while)Did not show progress in his long passes. Missed sure TD's to Wallace at least 6 times or more plus missed other open targets as well. I'm not giving up on him just yet but I'm not sure he's the guy. Hard to tell at this point. He had no o-line or running game most of the games but those bad misses had nothing to do with it.

RB-Miller- did not improve at all. Was not a factor in the passing game and was horrible at pass blocking the blitz.
Thomas- Had ONE good game. Did not improve and was a wasted pic.

TE- Clay- not really a TE, more of a HB but he did improve. Nice eason for him.
TE-Egnew- lol

LT- Martin- do I need to say anything?
LG-Incognito- do I need to say anything?
C-Pouncy- Made the probowl but had a better season in 2012......missed a couple of games and was a part of an o-line that gave up 58 sacks.
RG- Jerry- did not make any progress
RT-Clabo wasn't with us last year

WR-Hartline- had about the same kind of year he had last season as far as yards but had 3 more TD's. Benefited from having Wallace on the other side.
WR- Mathews- made some nice progress
Wallace wasn't with us last year.

DE-Wake- made the probowl on reputation but didn't have his best year. Missed some games and played hurting in others. Had some nice games but was invicible in others
DT-Starks-Soliai-Odrick- all 3 had better years in 2012 imo. None was great this year. Actually all 3 were very average and part of a pretty bad run defense that starts with them up front.
DE-Vernon- made some progress but ended up quiet. Still, I give him some props.

LB's. Misi was about the same as last year
Wheeler and Ellerber were not here last year(more on the new guys later)

CB- Grimes was not here last year
CB-Patterson- injured once again.
CB-Carrol- Startes cause we had nobody else

S-Jones-regressed big time
S-Clemons- about the same as last year which isn't much

So we had Clay made some real progress on offense and Tanny made some progress.Hartline increased his TD production. Everyone else was the same or worst. Pouncy had a decent year but not better.

On defense we had Vernon with progress and everyone else was about the same or worst.

Now for the new guys/ positions.
Wallace was brought in to be a #1 WR and to score TD's. He did help open up some things for others. Not the year we were hoping but not his fault Tanny missed him so many times for sure TD's. So a WR spot was progress over what we had last year.

Keller was gobe before the season started. Had he played he'd have help but Clay would not had developed as much. Please don't come here telling me that Keller would have 800 yards on top of what Clay had. You can't have it both ways. Had Keller played it'd have diminished the role of Clay.

Gibson was having a nice year but got hurt. Mathews stepped up and mde a contribution but had Gibson not gotten hurt, Mathews would not had played much on offense.

Grimes- a real improvement over one of the corners we had last year.
Wheeler and Ellerber- clearly a regresion on both spots.

Draft pics- We moved up(and use an extra 2nd) to draft Jordan. Yes he has talent but was hurt in college and we don' know what position is really the best for him. I know we need to give the rookies time but at #3 you want a guy to come in and make an impact and he didn't. Time will tell if he becomes an impact players.
All the other pics couldn't even get on the field. We drafted 2 DB's that were hurt in college so 3 of our top 4 pics were hurt in college and the other can't play for crap.

Overall we saw good progress with Clay as far as receiving and we made progress at one WR spot with Wallace over last year. The oline was worst this year and so was the running game.

On defense we saw progres at one corner spot with Grimes and some progress with Vernon. The pass rush was worst this year and the run defense was one of the worst in the NFL. Regressed big time at LB's. The D-line regressed too, specially playing the run and the safeties were crap.

With all the money we had tospend and 5 pics in te first 3 rounds we ended up with Wallace and Grimes making a real contributon and getting nothing from the bunch on injured players we drafted.

Imo, Ireland needs to go. Philbin couldn't get his team ready to play the last 2 weeks needing only ONE win to make the playoffs. The players were flat and made no plays while the jets played as if tey were trying to save Rex's live.
Philbin needs to go and Sherman with him. We won one more game than last year to finish 8 and 8. Some will say we improved cause we won one more game. I failed to see thi amazing improvement they're talking about.

Definitely not enough to keep Ireland and Sherman.

the qb got much needed experience and all in all took a step...charles clay made huge strides...after that i dont really see much improvement in individual players...nolan carroll was playing pretty well but he fell on his face the last 2 games...daniel thomas looked the best he has since he got here...other than pass pro...michael egnew went from an eye sore to a end of your 53 rosterable tight end

I'd say our real problem is the O line. Fix that and we have maybe 2 or 3 more wins.

I think Ireland should stay. lets start the arguing. Lets get this offseason started off in predictable fashion.

Not much to argue about. You say you'd be happy the team won a game "They had to win in a big spot" and they laid and egg. Are you still happy wit our team? I just want to know if you think there was alot of Progress. So what's your answer to that?

Improved: Odrick, Vernon, Clay, Mathews, Tannehill, Carroll, DT, Patterson.

But it's all about the QB. I think he's our guy, but didn't help his cause in the last two division games. Give him another year to clear our minds of the sh-t show he put on these last two games.

Patterson played like 4 games only. How would you call that improved? Carroll played cause Patterson was out, not cause he was good.

I hate to be THAT guy, but your use of the word pic instead of pick made me stop reading. I do agree though that overall, we regressed. Our run D last year was great, this year it pretty much sucked. I pin that on the LB's mostly. I absolutely hate that last year Dansby was dropping pick 6's on a weekly basis, then he goes to Arizona, and starts getting picks like every other game. WTF is the deal??

Do not be fooled. Although we are a game better than last year, this team has actually regressed significantly

The Qb failed to get us in the playoffs in his second year. He had a perfect opportunity to. Meanwhile his peers in Wilson, Kaepernick, Foles, Dalton, and Luck continue to do so.

Longterm for our Super Bowl aspirations, that is a huge blow. Tannehill already had a bazaar resume, and his odds to greatness a longshot. Now those odds get longer.

I'm taking a big picture look at things and tired of all the excuse making. What does it take to win a championship? Well for one it takes beating the Jets at home to get into the playoffs. That's what franchise Qbs do. That's what Rodgers and Foles helped deliver. Rivers, and Ben too. Flacco gets a pass, because he's a Super Bowl MVP. Tannehill will be on another team in two years, throwing 6 yards on 3rd and 8.

Clay and Vernon took that step. That's about it. This was a disturbingly unproductive year. We regressed at several positions. After 2 full years as a starter Tannehill has to take a leap forward in year 3. He just has to or our outlook moving forward is grim.

I think that Vernon had a good season but whether he will continue to have seasons like this or not remains to be seen, I am not convinced.

I think that Hartline, in my mind, has solidified himself as a great WR. He might not be Mr. All-World diva WR but he's good and I am glad we kept him.

Clay was a huge surprise and I hope he keeps it up.

RT was alright, he improved in some areas, but he seemed to regress in some, so I am still hopeful but I wonder what would happen should a new OC come in that he hasn't worked with for years.

All in all though we stayed the SAME if not worse.

This is the team that Philbin took over:

Offense - Decent running game (Polite was Mr. 1st Down), average passing game, moved the ball well between the 20s. A lack of offensive playmakers (and poor playcalling) meant that they had to settle for mostly FGs instead of TDs in the red zone. They needed a true #1 WR, a seam threat TE, and one or two upgrades to the o-line. Fasano was a good blocker which helped a lot.

Defense - Top 5 rushing defense. Needed CBs who could make big plays and hold on to the ball (Sean Smith!), and possibly a LB upgrade. Another pass rusher would be nice.

In comes Philbin, and what did he and Ireland accomplish?

Offense - Better QB play. Wallace is good, but no chemistry with Tannehill (yet). Gibson an upgrade over Bess. Neglected the o-line for two straight years; the only additions were bargain-basement FAs or draft projects. Fasano is no longer here to help with blocking, and the line has given up a record number of sacks. (Although McKinnie was a slight upgrade over Martin, they don't get credit for signing him. They were forced to do something by the owner.) Clay is okay. Philbin's offense uses short timing passes in place of the running game, so no FB was needed (or wanted) and the RB position was not upgraded (and possibly downgraded). Instead of Polite and his automatic 1st downs, they now can't convert on 3rd and inches. In the red zone, they now get more TDs, but due to the lack of a running game too many drives are stalled and they rarely reach the red zone. This offense has a habit of being shut out for entire halves of games. Sherman's playcalling is possibly worse than Henning's.

Defense - Philbin (and Coyle) wanted a change in scheme, and after the first year the Top 5 run defense dropped to a middle-of-the-pack run defense. For year two, Ireland swaps LBs, and now they're a Bottom 5 run defense. Grimes is a definite upgrade, and so is Patterson (when he's on the field). Safety play has dropped off, possibly due to scheme changes and assignments. Too many times this defense gives up long runs on 3rd and long, and opponents often march down the field because defenders play 10 yards off of the WRs. Ireland moved up to the #3 pick for a pass rusher who was hurt and rarely gets on the field. He also drafted 2 CBs with medical issues that rarely see the field. His late round LB gets more playing time than his top picks. Against NE, a poached practice squad player got the nod ahead of players that he already had on the roster. (This worked out well, but it doesn't make Ireland a genius!)

Yes, there are some upgrades at a few positions. But, what matters most is that after 2 years of Philbin installing his system and Ireland working his magic we get a team that ended the season shut out by Buffalo and nearly shut out by the Jets when a playoff spot was theirs for the taking. I don't see how anyone in their right mind could think that Ross should keep Philbin (and his staff), or that Ireland is doing a great job.
