I think that Nolan has enough autonomy on the defensive side here that it's not unlike being a HC in some respects. He makes the defensive decisions and can focus on what he's good at without having to worry about the offensive side of the ball, media issues, etc...that he would as a head coach. If he is compensated well enough, I think that it might be likely that he stays here regardless of our HC (unless of course, we get someone who wants to run a 4-3 defense...does anyone still run those anymore?). Any head coach would be nuts to want 'their own guy' in lieu of Nolan who has proven with multiple teams that he is in the top 3 D coordinators in the league. There's something to be said about familiarity....but there is more to be said about excellence.

I feel I maybe the only one but lets see how this season goes before we label the fins defense as very good/elite. For sure it was aggressive and did good things especially against the run last season.

But we need to see a consistant, dominating and imposing defense that brings the fear factor to opponents each game.

The reason everyone is so hopeful is that we were essentially a few dropped INT's away from being a top 5 defense in this league, and we've only improved. We're even deeper along the D-line if you can imagine that, we've upgraded our ILB position, a position of weakness last year, we've improved our pass rush and our young secondary has another year under it's belt. As long as we stay healthy, and our CB's can hold on to those INT's (I'm talking to YOU Sean Smith!!!!!!) we're right there.
