How short does 3rd down have to be for Markley to run Ronnie?

Even if the defense is playing run? 3rd and three seemed too long against Houston for markley to pull the trigger on Ronnie.

Well when your forced to run out of shotgun because of Daunte that 3rd and 3 becomes 3rd and 8 or 9 :tantrum:

then u put daunte under center and have ronnie run it. They still have to play where he's going to run and if their going to run off the guard, tackle, or stretch, which we ran very well with agianst the Titans.

i dont understand how u guys cant see that there are absolutely no holes open anywhere for ronnie. the only reason he's gaining any yards at all is from him being a good back... our o-line right now i've seen so far has opened 1 hole for ronnie. and he gained 20+ yards off it by running over a corner....

WE CANT RUN ON THIRD DOWN, THE O-LINE CAN'T DO IT. ITS NOT HARD TO SEE PEOPLE

1st down = Ronnie run for 3 to 4 yards

2nd down = shotgun formation/incomplete

3rd down = shotgun formation/sack

Game on the line? Let Ronnie throw it. No other pass play, but Ronnie is our best option. Even if he did land it, it's still a stupid play.

I'm already used to it.

Mularkey's play calling is being dictated by the porous line as duly mentioned above. It's understood that the line is so weak that it needs to be taken as a handicap when calling runs

BUT, there comes a time when a line must be drawn. Mularkey is still being too reactive and not proactive. We need to run more on 1st down and then on 2nd open things up even with our line. Mularkey needs to pull a Linehan and go deep occasionally to loosen up the defense. By not doing so we get into these 3rd down and longs over and over again due to going shotgun and pass first philosophy.

That is why draws, screens, and quick slants on a quick drop from Daunte should be used. The shotgun needs to be called less. The way Mularkey is calling it, regardless of how bad the OL is playing, is making the offense way to predictable. Its a catch 22 all the way around. True, Mularkey can't be totally at fault due to the cards dealt to him. However, when things get so predictable that it plays in the hands of the opposing defense that is when the buck stops with the OC. That is why I voted Yes to the question on the home page regarding regret that Saban hired Mularkey.

.

Saying that the line is a reason why 3rd and 3 is AUTOMATICALLY a pass is rediculous. Bad line or not... it is 3 freakin yards. Ronnie has plowed straight through defenses for more than that. If it is longer than 2 yards... I already know we are going to pass... which is pathetic...

the only yards ronnie has been getting lately when he actually gets a chance to run

is the yards he really earns himself, by fighting and plowing people over

True. When fans on an internet board are writing that they can tell from watching the game in their living rooms that on 3rd and 3 or longer they can predict a pass with certainty gives you an idea on how obviously flawed the play calling is. Even with a line that leaves a lot to be desired we can not give up on the run like we have over the past few weeks.

Ronnie has been definitely earning his yards the hard way. The guy is getting hammered and still doing his best to run over and through defenders. A good way of measuring how badly the line is blocking for him is to count how many folks touch Ronnie by the time he is down. Too many defenders taking too many hits throughout the game.

yup

to me it shows how great a running back he is, making those tough yards like that, imagine his numbers would be with a good oline?

Ricky in 2002. That would be sick.

2nd DRIVE of the Houston game:
3rd and 3. Instead of a run, Culpepper passes to Ronnie for a 12-yard gain. Nothing wrong with that call.

4th DRIVE of the Houston game:
3rd and 4. Instead of a run, Culpepper passes to Booker for an 18-yard gain. Nothing wrong with that call, either.

6th DRIVE of the Houston game:
3rd and 3 - short pass to Ronnie for a 1-yard gain. One questionable call.

9th DRIVE of the Houston game:
3rd and 4. Mularkey calls a pass. Culpepper is chased out of the pocket because of poor pass protection. You blaming that on Mularkey, too? Fine, I'll give you that one.

10th DRIVE of the Houston game:
3rd and 3 - pass dropped by Booker. Would have been a 1st down. Can't blame Mularkey for that.

So that brings the sum total to 2 questionable calls for the entire Houston game as far as 3rd and short goes.
