How Should The Dolphins Maneuver For A 1st Round Pick In 2020 Without Tanking?

Many teams have found their franchise QB in the draft without tanking, but dealing instead. The Rams and Eagles both dealed their way to the top of the draft. The Bills dealed their way in position to take Josh Allen.

So how would you set up the team to have the best shot to get a top pick in 2020 without tanking completely?
 
You have to give up something either way. The cheaper option is to tank. Plus, it’s easier because you don’t have to hope that someone else is willing to deal.
 
You mortgage future picks. It's just what it takes.

Trading your cornerstone talent just isn't logical. X and LT are the only 100 sure things you have on this roster, and they play premier positions. You hold on to them and you trade future draft capital and scraps if that's what it takes to get up there.

You can live w/ out first round picks for a year or so
 
Trade for tons of future picks... possibly get lucky and get a high pick from a team that wets the bed next year.. maybe that will get you close enough to at least try.
 
It would take a whole lot. Especially in 2020 when the QB's are expected to be that good, and idk if it would even be possible to move up to #1. If a QB needy team is sitting there at #1 and they feel like there's a Franchise QB in the draft then they may not trade the pick no matter what you offer
 
Looking at the schedule I don’t think tanking is necessary. If Buffalo and the Jets improve as expected 0-6 in the division is a real possibility. Now look at the remainder of the schedule.
 
hmm ill decide after tonight if we should wait until 2021 for Trevor Lawrence lol. Or is there any way he can come out as a sophomore like Mike Vick did?
 
They can move up any year with picks, unless a team wants to stay pat like the Browns last year.
 
I don't want to deal this years RD1, but I could see dealing our 2021, to move up for a QB in 2020.

I also wouldn't be opposed to trading X to get it done, but I don't see it as realistic. I want more for Howard than most teams are likely to give us.

Now, if management wants to avoid paying a CB 16+ mil a year, that might be something else altogether.
 
Something just occurred to me while pondering the situation.

"Tanking" had bad connotations in my mind, as loosing on purpose goes against what I believe in general.

But, the instant you decide to go into 2019 with a sub par QB, when others are available (which I'm in favor of), I guess that is tanking.

I guess my point is "tanking" probably doesn't mean the same thing to everyone.

Maybe others can share their view of what they consider tanking, and where do they draw the line?
 
It’s also easier to maneuver to the top of the draft from inside the top ten than from the middle of it which is where the Dolphins’ mediocre record usually puts them.
 
There's only so many choices:

1) Get a high pick by losing a lot of games.
2) Mortgage future picks to trade up.
3) Trade good/elite talent for picks.

(1) and (3) was the approach taken by the Gruden and the Raiders. (3) also lends itself to (1). If we were to actually attempt #3, the players that COULD net picks (not necessarily high ones) are Jones, Wake, Howard, Tunsil, Tannehill, James. Of that list, most people wouldn't want to do that to Wake unless he wanted to be traded to a competitor. Howard, though you have to pay, is an elite talent at DB that you'd like to be able to keep on any defense. You need an elite LT to protect your QB. So really, that leaves Jones (who is expendable since you have TJM and Fitz), Tannehill, and James. These are all mid-round picks AT BEST and might not give you the ammo to move up too far.

Since you don't have a Khalil Mack that you can trade away and get back a huge return, you're looking at #1 and #2. One of those sets you back much further than the other, especially if you are wrong on the QB pick.
