Sparano revealed that in order to prepare for the expected elements he had Johnson and Satele work with wet footballs and even frozen footballs in practice so they could get familiar with snapping the ball in not so ideal conditions. He didn't necessarily pull a football out of the freezer, but he would have a bucket of ice thrown over the top of the ball just before the snap, and he mentioned that back in training camp he would have the footballs hosed down with water right before the snap, which is something other teams have done as well.

"If we could practice in a freezer we would have," Sparano joked.

It might not have been a bad idea to head out there a few days early to get acclimated by running some cold weather practices.

Good idea and concept, but, nothing prepares you for snapping a cold ball with cold hands.

i wonder if that would be worth disturbing the players established routine for games away from home. i would be all for heading out early and getting some work in, but maybe they think it would disrupt things to much?

I think there is something to be said for both things and ways. I don't think a few days would make a huge difference though.

off topic, but i'm glad that the game in new york isn't this weekend with what we are getting hammered with up here right now.

these guys are paid millions. they better be able to play in any climate.

but dont worry guys, Chad Pennington played for NYJ for 6 years? in the freezing cold, im sure hes used to it. So is Jake Long being at Michigan (cold too). Ted Ginn being at Ohio State, which is also kinda cold.

but most of all like i said, these guys need to be able to play in any condition, with the amount of money theyre making.

I hope this shuts up the people saying the Fins will collapse in cold weather and this is a major trap game .. its gettin annoying man

I read somewhere (maybe that article) that the Chiefs were practicing in-doors?

Why do that? Does it risk injury to practice in the cold? Do they not care enough since the playoffs are gone for them? What gives? Is he really that bad of a coach? Anyone have some insight?

Cold weather players: Pennington, Ginn, JLong, L.Polite(Pitt), Alleman(Ohio), Porter, WAllen,R Torbor(NYGiants), RHill(Michigan State),Ferguson(NYJets)- all these guys have done it, not even counting the kicker and punter. That's a good base.
The Chiefs will be cold too.
And most teams that play in the cold don't like to practice in the cold. They say it screws up valuable practice time because players don't rep as well. The Bills used to do this. I remember when Thurman Thomas came here in 2000 and we were prepping to go up to Buffalo in December, and everyone was talking about how the Bills had such an advantage. Then Thomas says - Hey, the Bills practice indoors when it gets cold, they just let everyone think they love it.
And we thrashed them.
The cold is all in your head.

My guess is its Herm .. I'm pretty sure if they were in our position with having to win the rest of our games to make the playoffs, they'd be outside .. but apparently that's not the case so I guess they're just not taking risks

i think our offense is built to strive in cold weather conditions.
won't affect us as much as people are making it out to be.

Why do we practice in a bubble? The Giants practiced indoors today. The fact that the Chiefs practiced indoors is not as a big deal ao some are saying.

It doesnt matter if they have played in the Cold or not. Miami is a warm weather team. Not a cold one. Chad and Joey Porter use to play in the cold all the time but they dont anymore. Even if they were use to playing in the cold they havent in a while now even if its only less then a year. They have played this whole season in warm weather. Not cold weather. Theres probably going to be a readjusting period when they go back out to play in the cold. Thats probably why there coach is having them practice in it right now. Just to get use to it again. Teams like the Jets, Steelers, Pats, and whoever else have been playing in the cold for a while now. The Dolphins have not.

That doesnt mean they cant win but just because they have players that USE TO playing in the cold doesnt mean that there just going to go back play like it isnt different. JMO.
