With Mark Sanchez Likely to start this year for the jets I thought I might do a little QB rating comparison of the last 10 QB's Drafted in the first round to see how they have done if pressed into action on their first year.
Year/Name/Rookie Rating
2005/ Alex Smith / 40.8
2005/ Aaron Rodgers / Did Not Start
2005/ Jason Campbell / Did Not Start
2006/ Vince Young / 66.7
2006/ Mat Leinart / 74.4
2006/ Jay Cutler/ 88.5
2007/ Jamarcus Russell/ 55.9
2007/ Brady Quinn /Did not start
2008/ Joe Flacco/ 80.3
2008/ Matt Ryan 87.7
Overall Rookie first round average QB Rating is 70.37
Chad Penningtons 2008 QB rating 97.4
Tom Brady tore his ACL last year and had 2 knee surgeries, he eventually had to have 2 more surgeries due to an infection. He has Participated in Camp and seems on track for a full recovery. the question is, will he drop off this year? The safe bet is to say yes he will drop off but not enough to make things easy for the rest of the AFC East. Brady Is more of a pocket passer and does not rely on his legs as much as Mcnabb or Culpepper. Unfortunately even with a sizable drop-off in his performance he is still likely going to be the best QB in the division. And with new rules being implemented tailor made to protect him he has a good chance at returning to full or near full form within the next 2 years.
Here Is A list of other QB's that had the same injury as Brady. Blue indicates an increase in performance and red a decrease. 3 out of 4 of the Qb's with recent ACL surgeries Had a noticeable drop of in performance in their next full seasons.
1) Carson Palmer Tore his ACL in his left knee on his first throw of his first playoff game. in 2008 he had another unrelated injury to his elbow.
Before ACL / Next full year after torn ACL
16 games /16 games
67 pct / 62 pct
32TD-12INT / 28TD-13INT
101 / 93 rate
sacks 19 / 32
2) Donovan Mcnabb tore his ACL in his right knee in 2006, he had a short injury filled season in 2005 because of an unrelated sports hernia and thumb issues. for this reason 2004 was used for pre ACL stats.
Before ACL / Next full year after torn ACL
15 Games / 14 Games
64 pct / 61 pct
31TD-8INT / 19TD-7INT
32 sack / 44 sack
104.4 / 89 rate
3) Daunte Culpepper tore his ACL right knee in 2006, as we all know too well, he has as of yet not been able to return to his pre-injury form.
Before ACL / Next full year after torn ACL
16 Games / 7
69.2 pct / 56 *avg
39TD 11INT / 9TD 14INT *total
46 sacks / NA
110 rating / 72.2 *avg
4) Philip Rivers tore his ACL in his right knee in 2007,his surgery went without a hitch and he was able to fully recover. Rivers actually had a better season after the injury.
Before ACL / Next full year after torn ACL
16 games / 16 games
60.2 pct / 65.3 pct
21TD-15INT / 34TD-11INT
22 sacks / 25 sacks
82.4 rate / 105.5 rate
Finally to finish off the divison we can look at Trent edwards last year vs our man Pennington. Both players are ready to improve upon last season with Pennington getting a full camp this year/having a full year under the same system, and with edwards getting T.O.
Trent Edwards 2008
PCT 65.5
Yards 2,699
TD/INT 11/10
Rate 85.4
Chad Pennington 2008
PCT 67.4
Yards 3,653
TD/INT 19/7
Rate 97.4
Bottom Line, The patriots are still king in the passing game until proven otherwise but for the first time in years the dolphins start training camp with a very favorable situation at quarterback, If Chad can build on last year and our receivers can step it up this could be an even better year for the Dolphins offense. We are no longer the laughing stock of the division when it comes to the passing game. The jets are in an unknown situation with Mark Sanchez he could be good or decent or bad. but the chances are he will not be as good as CP. The bills took a chance with TO and I have no doubt that he will be good this year, but you have to think that in the long run this decision will burn the bills like it has every other team that has ever signed him.
Cheers
