How the Mike Nolan deal to Miami went down: by Steve Wyche

The Dolphins sent the Broncos a written request to interview Nolan. McDaniels approached Nolan with the request and, in a nutshell, asked him if he’d rather be in Miami or Denver. Nolan said he would like to interview with the Dolphins. McDaniels then granted Nolan permission and wished him well.

Possibly factoring into Nolan’s decision, his contract with the Broncos supposedly was set to expire after next season, as will a lot of the team’s assistant coaches’ deals. With the possibility of a work stoppage, Nolan foresaw being able to negotiate a contract that would pay him through a lockout with the Dolphins, should the NFL and the NFL Players Association not be able to finalize a labor deal before the 2011 season.

With a deal coming together so quickly with the Dolphins –- one day after Nolan split from Denver –- parameters of a deal had to have been in place before or shortly after he left the Broncos

it doesn't explain how we knew to ask

if Nolan was under contract with us and another team asked permission to interview him for a lateral move wouldn't you be upset(as a fan) and think tampering? I would

I don't know if McDainiels doesn't know what he is doing or he doesn't care

if there really was absolutely no acrimony, how did we know to ask and why did McDaniels not care?

McDaniels didn't know Nolan when he hired him and Nolan's style of play calling didn't suit McDaniels. No surprise. McDaniels will gut that organization in hopes of building a Patriots prototype franchise.

Next on his list is to gut the OL and bring in the larger more physical type that Denver does not have. With our glutton of rotating OL, the Broncos could be a prime choice to make a trade with for players/draft picks.

McDaniels could have said NO. Plain and simple. The FO followed the rules and got their man. I honestly don't care what the Denver fans think.

vernon carey in a trade package for marshall?

but then he'd have an unhappy coordinator. Why would you want someone working for you, that wasn't happy being there?

So basically:

McDaniels: You don't wanna be here???
Nolan: It's not that baby, I just want to figure out my options, see what else is out there.
McDaniels: Fine! Leave me! I'll be better off anyways!

Exactly. How many catches did Carey have last year? TDs? Its a no brainer

I just don't see this as tampering....I am sure the Phins asked permission and didn't just call Nolan on the sly and say, "If you resign in Denver we will offer you the DC spot in Miami." Nolan has forgotten more about football then McDaniels will ever know. Any of you ever work for a boss who knows little about the job and he is trying to tell you how to do your job....it's a joke. I am sure Nolan had enough of the Boy Wonder.

seriously, how is the qb going to have any time to throw to marshall if he is getting blown up by the defensive end? carey played at a pro bowl level last year for a right tackle. not only that, we just signed him to a big contract. that would be incredibly stupid.

It sucks for sure, the boss that is. It's happened to me a couple of times. But I have learned my lesson, I interview them!

I agree that Nolan is the better coach of the two. McDaniels is in over his head and making dumb decisions. Watch him loose Marshall and have the house of cards come down on him. The O did OK, but the D carried their team. Good for us we have their DC and hopefully BM!

I think we might have enough in Garner to cover Carey. He played well, but not better than in 2008. I wouldn't say pro bowler for this year when he had the second half that he (Carey) did. Garner is pretty solid, but we need a healthy season out of Smiley if Carey is traded.

A third rounder and Carey for Marshall sound about right. The bigger problem is the deal that Marshall is going to want. He will want to be the highest payed WR in the NFL. Is our front office willing to do that? I would, but I don't think they will.

The contract might be the reason the Broncos would do it. He is entering his prime, with more potential, and he gets payed fairly (top ten RT $). And he is BIG like McDaniels should like!
