So i was reading an article on Miamidolphins.com today and came across a story of Don Shula cutting 7 players for going out and shaking hands with the opposing team before a preseason game. I never really had the chance to know SHula the coach because of my age. But this story just makes me want to know more about the best coach in the history of the game. What other stories do you guys have about Shula? Anything top this?

Cefalo drew some laughs from the crowd before calling on Shula to present quarterback Chad Pennington with the Don Shula Leadership Award. He shared the story of how during the 1982 strike season as the players' union representative he had to stand up to Shula and let him know of the decision by the players from Miami and the Washington Redskins to shake hands before a preseason game in a show of solidarity. Shula expressed his desire for that not to happen, but when all but seven players followed Cefalo's lead anyway, he cut those seven players and told Cefalo to remember never to compromise your beliefs.

I don't know if this is true or not but if it is true, it seems pretty tough to me.

With that been said. How can anybody question the best coach of alltime.

cut seven after a preseason game for shaking hands? they were probably gonna get cut anyway.

Thing I've noticed about Schula's generation is that "tough" was not mentioned. You were or you weren't. It's just sort of a state of being. The men of his generation fought wars because it was the thing to do. You didn't wave a flag around, you just went and did, because you were supposed to.

Schula was tough, because men, then, were a different breed. For better or for worse.

I completely agree with Goon. Good post.

Goon,

Killer response man.

I guess this game has gone soft over the year huh?

Thanks!

 It's changed...for better or for worse. I sort of came to this revelation when I compared an M-1 Garrand, which was the WWII service rifle, compared to the M-16 I carried. That M-1 is friggin HEAVY. Just something about the rifle they carried speaks about the men, IMO.

"but when all but seven players followed Cefalo's lead anyway, he cut those seven players"

This would imply to me that he actually cut the seven players that did not shake hands, not the ones that did. Am I wrong? It is late in the day...

Andy i think you are right! This article wasnt written well, so i didnt catch that.

No worries, you're right the wording isn't great, which is why I wasn't even sure I got it right. It certainly changes the entire message Shula was sending.
