now the exciting sequel of How wanny ruined the bears I bring you how wanny ruined the phins, stuff most you know wrapped neatly in a nice packaged rant.
Forget seasons 1-4. In season 5 when wanny knew he was on his way out thats when he really trashed this franchise. So many bonehead moves in one year is funny. Alot to blame spielman for they have somehow become tied togehter.
Reason 1: 19 mil salary cap and 2nd rounder for A.J. Feeley. Now me or any other dolphin fan off the street could have told you in a year where T.O. was traded to the eagles for a 2nd rounder, what makes you think the lowest they would take for there 3rd stringer was a 2nd rounder. This leads to another issue to be discussed later. Also in this category is how then after trading so high for him do you screw around in the season and play QB flip flop. Yes Feeley played well for 1 game(pats), but by law of averages it was bound to happen with all the picks the guy threw. Lets just hope Ferrote this year doesnt get an F at QB play like Fiedler and Feeley so far have. If peyton manning was on this team right now he would have 60 Touchdowns with all the WR and TE talent on the team. Yet another panic move to get an upgrade over Fiedler after being rejected by Ramsey and Brunell.
Reason 2: Running back debatacle: By making the dolphins offense so 1-Dimentional what did many of us expect to happen after ricky abruptly left. Do many of us remember why so many of us were so mad at him, because if he had retired just a few days earlier we could have gotten Eddie George, which in hindsight would not have been such a great move. Also if you are the head coach how do you not sense displeasure of your franchise player until after he tells you he is leaving. Also if you are the head coach how do you not know the current drug program status of your star player until after he has been suspended. Then the dolphins followed with panic move after panic move including trading a 3rd rounder for the rams 3rd string running back. Im sure if our 2nd rounder still existed we would have lost that one here too. But none the less this trade after we had lost so many games already was a panic move because wanny knew without a run game he was gone. And after gordon got hurt bringing in a slew of running backs from Morris to Forsey.
Reason 3: Not knowing when to let go of fiedler: Having to play in Miami after the Legend of Marino is a hard act to follow for that Fiedler got a rough start. But when it was seen he was not the answer to the dolphins problems somthing had to be done, there answer see reason 1. He should have been dropped when he refused to take a pay cut. Although payed less he could have been a starter here, now he has a pay cut and is a backup.
Reason 4: Putting the phins in cap hell: With vets such as taylor and thomas restructing deals every year there is no reason we should be in so much cap problems. Of course over paying players will do that to you. With starting CB's for the phins being both probowlers was there a need to get depth on this team yeah probably, but overpaying for a CB that so far has been beat out by a rookie not a good idea. Paying 2 average/below average QB's close to 20 mil each another poor idea. Lying to sam madison to get him to restructure so we could sign pat and not signing pat, horrible idea. Wasting money on oline players that just cant block another horrible idea. With guys as McIntosh and Seth getting payed and starting what were they thinking. For the money wasted on QB's and other players that dont pan out we could have kept our two pro-bowl CB's this year and Daniels and poole could have been great depth.
Reason 5: Trading a 4th rounder to move up one spot. How bad can two people be to be duped by Tice and the vikings. As fans we knew the vikings werent going to trade there pick to the pats for carey. If carey was taken we knew wilfork would have been just as good of a pickup. This move wasted draft picks and was yet another over pay. Why you say did the dolphins fall for it, because it was well known our weakness was online and we would draft that in the first round finally and were taken advantage of. And even after moving up one spot, Carey could not start on one of the worst o-lines in history, bring up the idea of 2 picks for a bust.
Reason 6: Keeping Wise: Vernon Carey was a bust or was he??? The answer after two games this preseason and Training camp is not really. McKinney at Center when most fans were calling for hadnot or anyone else to play that position yet wise kept McKinney, the human turnstile) there. We have learned so far he is not center material. Back to Carey. For a guy who couldnt break the NFL's worst O-Line he has looked like one hell of a LT this year. Did he somehow take MJ's secret stuff and get good all of a sudden. McIntosh seemed like a good pickup until we saw him play under wise. Same would go to Jeno who although showing he was best lineman last year still was part of a swiss cheese line.
Reason 7: Run, Run, Run, Punt... nuff said.
The Final Reason: The December Collapse: The dolphins started becoming known for this and division rivals loved it. 2 Years previous we had the division wrapped up easily winning the division over the jets and pats and going to the playoffs with 10 to 12 wins. Then came the collapse that tied us with the pats and jets giving the jets the division. Why was it every year we had this collapse was it because the way he played the players during the season, was it the motivation in december. Maybe it was the fatigue that set in because of poor planning and practices plans. Who knows why but if a team looks so poor in the 2nd half of the season the coach has to figure out why and not just chalk it up to being late in the season(This is somthing the vikings may want to look at now). The ultimate proof it probably was coaching, Jim Bates takes over as coach in final season and low and behold December is the dolphins best Month getting 3 wins, somthing not done under wanny era with a much better team.
Sorry for the long read, but I was reflecting on what many have said and decided to sum up these blunders to show some fans why we are talking about poor performances now. Who knows had wanny been fired a year earlier maybe we wouldnt have gotten saban, maybe we wouldnt have gotten houck and linehan, but none the less we are still paying for the moves of wanny and spielman now and will be for at least the next two years, we will just have to overcome them.
Feel free to add any other reasons.
