How was the game coached in your opinion

We used all our timeouts w like 5 minutes left in the half in the first. Way too many plays behind the los. Can't get plays in on time

Second half was significantly better

I am down on McCoach's performance. Teams know what we like to do and will plan accordingly. Where were the medium post routes from Jonnu or anybody else? Reek scored on one and Waddle had a big play on one. Yea, we ran the ball some in the second half, but you have to move the LB's and Safety's back in order to do that. If they take away the middle in routes and stop your bubble screens, don't do that until you loosen the defense up some. Better play calling might just work.
Edit; The timeout usage, especially in the first half was abysmal. Weaver lit a fire under the D in the second half for a positive.

They have plus plus talent upfront and very tacklers.

I liked that we adjusted and it paid off we kept churning the clock and their défense was suffering late when we fresh legs in the backfield
Exactly. I see a lot of posters here are criticizing the number of screens we threw. We only went to that when we realized our typical quick slants and mid range darts weren’t going to work. Years past we would have pressed the issue. McCoach adjusted brilliantly and not a coincidence we out scored them 20-3 after the adjustment in play calling.

Weaver’s second half adjustments which led to a shutout after allowing a 97? yard drive in the first half…… A+++

Would be a tad concerned about the run D (especially interior) going forward but the secondary and pass rush will be fine. We did well creating pressure today considering JP’s first game back ahead of schedule, and without Chubb.

Spot on! I'm not sure what was done, but I was pleasantly surprised with Weaver and his adjustments. He called a good game!

As for the offense, I know we were rusty and we will get better, but if Tua is going to drop back and sit in the pocket we need someone better than Berrios as a last resort. I know we have OBJ coming sometime this year, but I wish Cracraft weren't hurt. Also, I wouldn't say I liked the screen passes because it looked like we were out of sync and Tua seemed late on some of them. There was no surprise element and he put our guys in a bad way along with those out there that were supposed to block. Maybe we will get better at them as the season wears on. All in all, happy we pulled out the win. It wasn't perfect, but the way we rested guys preseason, I am not surprised. Hopefully, we are ready to play Thursday for a big divisional game.

The screens were not only in the second half mate. There was actually a good dose of mid range stuff as well that looked to be more rust because they weren't working. The adjustment wasn't more screens, it was getting Tua going on deeper passes and some run penetration that made it start working. I just watched the All-22 and while the screens werent as many as I originally recalled live (there were a bunch of pitches that get lumped in) there were still far far far too many. And I don't recall a single slant the entire game which is odd.

Lots of good takes here regarding the in game coaching, but Im going to look at this from a different angle.

I think our pregame prep was bad. Tua looked out of sync with his receivers and our D looked lost at times (In the first half, letting Jags receivers find a lot of separation and holes in our zone coverage.

Happily, they cleaned a lot of it up at half time, but we should not have come out looking that flat (I think flat is being generous btw)

Too many vet rest days and not enough preseason reps really showed yesterday.

Hopefully the team remembers the halftime speeches and carry that forward throughout the season.

The coaches need to do a better job getting theses guys prepped for the game.

Really like his creativity but being three years as HC I find it interesting that we still need to ask this question. Don't understand his game plans at times and see slow evolution in areas that I would think should be cleared up by now. We had something like 17 passes behind the O line ????
think C, C- ...
But we did win and thats the name of the game ( at least this game )
Oh ya Tua had a couple of 2nd reads for long passes (Tyreek Wadd) just thinking if he had that kind of time as far as protection he'd be unstoppable....oh well

Right - we used the screens early too w some mild success. There were a lot of pass plays where the first option wasn’t there and you could tell the play had no chance once Tua had to hesitate. As you said, we went away from that and let some longer developing plays happen where he could go though progressions (the bombs to Hill and Waddle were like that), used the run. What I liked is we adjusted. The bread and butter quick passing game didn’t work right out of the gate - the Jags were on it. As we adjusted, Tua’s comp% went up, the yards went up and the points went up. Good stuff

Only because the forward pass wasn’t working early. In years past, he would have kept forcing it.

I'm not really sure I saw much of an adjustment as far as the play calls went tbh. There were still screens, still runs up the middle, still a couple mid range strikes, a couple deep attempts/completions. I didn't note any real change in play calling per sae. What I did see was Wilson infusing new energy and strength in those up the middle runs pulling the LB's back towards the middle to contain then opening up way more opportunites. The Jags were starting to get tired and our deep bench of RBs started to really get to work.

At any point, if we can pull them in to respect the run, the game should open up wide. The screen passes just don't do that. I get the confidence in this OL is meh level, but they performed okay yesterday, hell better than last year giving Tua enough time for second and third reads. I don't think the NEED was there for those screens considering the quickness of JAX line and LBs to get to those receivers. JAX started off weak in the secondary, Tua after the rust shake off was money long-deep. Keep hammering the long ball then gash em with Achane.

The playcalling just didn't make sense for this game IMO. Glad we got the win, but this is EXACTLY what got us in trouble last year.

Left a lot to be desired and Mikes play calling today had zero growth from previous years. Can’t get plays in in timely manner and his calls were not good majority of the day. Finally made some nice calls at the end like Ingolds 2 short runs

The wasted timeouts made me sad. That should have been fixed before this year. That business is going to bite them right in the ass soon.

If by defense dictating what they should do you mean blowing them up the entire first half then yeah, they were dictating what we should do.
I agree the Jags defense were shutting us down. I’m just saying I think it’s more from a lack of play execution than play design.

Thought McDaniel coached aloof today with the play calling. I thought Weaver took his lumps, but overall showed promise.

McDaniel seemed too inclined to attempting a 50 plus yard field goal at the end of the game.

I thought he showed some of his old ways. Going for it on 4th and long, throwing 30yr passes on 3 and 6. We won and our offense put up 400 yards, but we need to score more points.

I couldn't figure out why we didn't put Wright in, when all the other RB's couldn't get much going. And, I expected more targets for Johnu Smith, especially when Smythe was having a very off day.
