I've wondered whether Lemon may be viewed as the QB of the future, but it's also the case that Sage will be a free agent next year, so Lemon could be viewed as the NUMBER TWO QB of the future. A solid #2 QB is worth the 6th round choice we traded for Lemon.
I think if Lemon shows some promise if and when he gets to play in the regular season this year, we'll see him compete with a veteran FA (perhaps Steve McNair or Jon Kitna) for the #1 slot, with the winner being the #1 and the loser being the #2. I think in that scenario we also draft someone on day 2 and make him the #3 guy next year.
If Lemon DOESN'T show promise this year, then I think we draft someone on day 1 (even round 1) and let him compete with the veteran QB AND Lemon next year.
Either way, I think we'll have a draft choice, a veteran (not Gus), and Lemon as our 3 QBs next year. Where we draft a QB (day 1 or day 2) will depend on how well Lemon does this year. Next year's depth chart at QB (1, 2, and 3) will depend on training camp.
The good thing about getting Lemon this year is that he gives us all the flexibility I outlined above. Had we not traded for him, we wouldn't have an idea of whether we should get a QB on day 1 or day 2 of the draft, nor the luxury of even GETTING a QB on day 2.
In other words, if Feeley were still here, we'd be forced to get a QB on day 1. This is assuming of course that we can't get a free agent QB who fits long-term (Carr, Brees, Rivers) -- that's been pretty tough to do in the league lately.
