I've noticed a disturbing trend lately, made more obvious by last night's Super Bowl. Why are QB's judged now SOLEY on their hardware? So because Peyton Manning lost last night, he's suddenly not an elite QB? I mean, he even has a ring atleast, but listening to talk radio its suddenly not enough. Now QB's need to have rings like Brady and Montana. How will history regard Marino? Not even in the Top 5? I think he's the clear #1, even speaking as both a Dolphins and football fan. Will people realize that Dan Marino was just one man? I don't hear people hampering on Barry Sanders for never winning a ring and he's arguably the greatest runningback of all time. This weekend, I guess with all the Marino comparisons and the game being in Miami has made me think about it...

Marino will always be one of the greatest QB's of all time. I can only imagine if he played in today's game, with all the emphasis on allowing the passing game to succeed, how much more stats he would have accumulated. Let's not forget when Danny retired, he held every meaningful stat related to the QB position, every single one. Now some of those records have been broken, most probably will be, but not by ONE man. They are spread around. Why? Because there was no greater "pure passer' to ever play the game...period...end of debate.

I just keep remembering that pass to duper at the HOF induction... the guy still had it.

wish he would've stuck around. damnit for getting old.

it makes me sick to hear these media idiot pundits . they keep on kissing Brady's *** and he isnt the reason the pats won their sb rings its because they have been a whole team for nearly as long as miami has of being a Incomplete team as a run but cant pass team and being a pass but cant run team.

I just we dont Screw Henne the way Jimmy and dave did Marino .

this is why I want to fix offense first because we have more issues that have benn lingering since Marino etired. the defense is almost fixed except for de, safety and linebacker.

He will go down as one of the best and imo he is almost the pioneer of the wide open offenses we see today. When he came into the NFL there wasnt a whole lot of gunslingers so to speak and I think his style of play and the way he played is the reason you see the peyton mannings and brett favre's and even drew bree's, it's also why you see qb's that have so much power when it comes down to playcalling and even in some instances have input on who a club would draft.
Now I may be giving danny a little too much credit for some things but its really my opinion that he opened some eyes and kinda started the qb movement and wide open offenses that we see today. I guess the reason I think this way is because until he came around no one had ever seen a guy that could do what he did on the field. So flame on if you disagree its my opinion and there's not a whole lot anyone can say that will get me too change it.

This is not a new trend it has always been that way. For Marino to be mentioned and ranked along with the greats who have Super Bowl rings is a testament to how good Dan was.

History regards Marino as the greatest QB to never win a Super Bowl and one of the greatest of all-time regardless of not winning a Super Bowl.

But don't you think using Super Bowl wins as the major, almost sole criteria for deciding greatness to be silly in a team sport?

history has already regarded dan marino. superbowl or no superbowl, he is regarded as one of the top 5 quarterbacks of all time. if you take away the qualification of winning a superbowl, he is THE greatest quarterback of all time. quarterbacks will come and go, but will never equal dan marino.

The media's reactionary and stupid to the point of ridiculousness. A week ago, Peyton was the consensus GOAT. Now, he's barely top 10. My advice: stop listening to these mouthbreathers.

History will always remember Marino because he is the only legitimate, first tier great QB to never win a championship. Just like the 72 Dolphins, the debate will always exist. That is Dan's legacy.

Greatest player w/out a ring along with greatest pure pocket passer/quickest release of all-time, no more no less.

As far as his history with this team, greatest to ever put on a Dolphins uniform.

I will say this, as more and more seasons go by and I see the teams that win Super Bowls, it becomes more and more apparent how unbelievably piss poor the talent was on the teams that Dan played on.

Dan was flat out incredible...the confidence, the swagger, the pocket presence, the release, the attitude, the ability to literally win games seemingly single-handedly.

His talent and body were absolutely burned up and wasted because he had nothing but crap surrounding him. If he had any semblance of consistent talent around him at the skill positions, he'd have a ring for every ****ing finger on his hand.

Marino wasn't really the first great quarterback to never win a championship....Fran Tarkenton held all those passing records Marino broke....Tarkenton was 0-3 in superbowls....but at least he had 3 chances...

Marino only had one chance....which tells you how inept the teams were that he was playing on....

Well if that's the case, then I guess Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Mark Rypien & Jeff Hostetler are some of the greatest QB's of all time since they were SB winners & Fran Tarkenton & Jim Kelly were bums because they couldn't get their teams the hardware?

I suppose had Marino, Kelly or Tarkenton been on those teams they would have stunk it up?

Put Marino on the 80's 49ers or the 90's Cowboys & see how may SB's he would have won.

C'Mon man!

Put Marino on the 80's 49ers or the 90's Cowboys & see how may SB's he would have won.

Dan actually wouldn't have needed all that talent...just a couple more skill position players....ANYTHING more than was on the teams he led for all those years, and he easily would have had at least one or two rings.

The garbage that he was surrounded by was nothing short of amazing.

This may be sacriledge here, but I honestly see him being remembered much like Dan Fouts 50 years from now... Outside of Miami, that is.

His lack of rings will diminish his stature as time goes on and all his records get broken...
