If Tannehill opts for surgery and loses the 2017 season, what does his future with the Dolphins look like? How many years are left on his contract?

The Dolphins would need to draft a young QB in 2018 as insurance and/or backup. Who knows who will be playing in 2017, but assuming they are successfully, that's yet another competitor for a Tannehill coming off an ACL surgery. It seems like this surgery will really complicate his career with Miami.

He'd be in a QB competition next year and would have to restructure. With 15.2M cap savings if he's cut and 4.2M dead money, he'd probably be cut unless he's 110% and that isn't going to happen.

Two major knee injuries within a year is a huge no-no. At that point his reliability is a question mark. They would be forced to cut him in order to save money and time. If not it would mean restructuring his deal which he will probably refuse, and not be guaranteed a starting position. The team would need to start looking at trading up to snag a QB to avoid another 15 years of misery

He hasn't even had one yet.

That is a fair question. I think Miami would draft a quarterback in the 2018 draft, maybe packaging picks to get up high. I haven't looked yet at the draft and what quarterbacks are available, but I think the team would have to add a talent there to compete.

It would be a shame because the needle is still pointing up for Tannehill with high expectations for 2017.

You have to draft a QB next year regardless of his health. Even if he was healthy, we've been neglecting this for too long. Teams like NE draft young QBs and develop them so when Brady goes down or gets suspended they can just plug that guy in and then trade him for picks later. Moore is a capable back up, but we need to prepare for the future and stop relying solely on a older journeyman back up. Miami has no young options outside Moore. The future at the position looks bleak right now if Tanny can't stay healthy anymore.

Problem is I think there is only 1 qb next year worthy. The following year looks much better

Can you imagine if the Patriots had cut Tom Brady because he tore his ACL?

Either you draft a QB next year or you pay Kirk Cousins a buttload of money. I personally like Kirk and he would pair great with Gase, but that'd be a lot of money.

Isn't this the year we get Darnold, Rosen and Allen into the draft? Granted, Darnold could come back to USC but if all three come out, the key is getting one. We could suck royally to land in a top 3-5 position to grab one or trade mega future assets to get into position to grab one. It depends on how we play overall this year and how the brass feels about the three players. Someone above said this wasn't the year for QBs, but I thought these three would be coming out, isn't that correct?

The cringe-worthy aspect of watching us and the Jets suck it up for positioning at year's end could be too much to take in, I must warn. Factor in how bad the 49ers and Browns could be too and finishing top three might be darn near impossible even with a backup QB. Unreal that I'm even pondering this!
