How would you feel about Jones at SS, Wilson at FS?

I don't think most people realize Clemons was injured most of last year. I'd like for Wilson to win the spot, but they aren't handing it to him. He'll be battling it out with Clemons, who could still grow into the position if he's healthy. Fans give up on players too easily. It takes some kids a couple of years to find themselves at the NFL level. Look at Soliai. Who would have thought he'd ever be a player worth a franchise tag early in his career? Everybody wanted him cut. I'm also encouraged about Jones at SS. It clearly is his more natural position. He was physical last year. And I would bet he can cover better than Bell who was statistically one of the worst SS in the league vs. the pass.

Exactly. Before he was hurt he was a very solid starter and was getting better and better with time. When he started over G Wilson you could see the difference in play. It was black and white. I think people wrote him off after the injury. He was coming back at the end of last year, but you could tell he still wasn't the same guy. If he's healed up 100% then there is no way he gets beat out by anyone we have on the roster at this moment.

You have to consider that this past coaching staff really had no interest in player development. Parcell model has always been about taking the players with four years of college experience and history of production. After watching what he did in Dallas and now in Miami I'm convinced it has nothing to do with player development.

They flat out did not prepare players to play let alone succeed. If they young players did not produce right away they were banished to special teams if not the inactive list or Practice squad. The players were given opportunities but once they started making mistakes were often yanked, sometimes never to be seen again. I'm hoping this Coaching staff is about player development and will get the most out of every player.

Personally I do like Wilson at FS and Jones at SS. Jones was known to be more of SS coming out of college so it was no suprise to me when his coverage skills were lacking. Clemons on the other hand is a decent db, he's not built to play SS and I believe he doesn't make enough plays to be a FS. From what I've read the Safety positions will be interchangeable so if that's the case and they are expecting both run and coverage support I would be more inclined to go with the Clemons/Wilson combo.

Can't pretend I'd be comfortable with anyone we can line up at safety - no proven good players there

Tyrell Johnson has a real chance to start simply because he's the latest acquisition

Clemons is in last chance saloon - scheduled to earn 1.9m next season (everyone else is bargain basement) - any more hamstring trouble and they lose patience and cut him I think

What kind of front office doesn't 'believe' in player development? heh really? ... you all may think parcells and co are stupid, but come on, they're getting paid millions to do this gig... the reason our young players didn't play was because they were not outperforming those ahead of them. it's hard to put your neck on the line when you're sitting at 7-9 and you wanna risk your reputation to start someone that is going to blow you more games and potentially cost you your job. that goes without saying for any coach... to say they didnt believe in player development is outlandish.

I think that big plays might be given up, but even bigger plays and bigger hits would get made. On passing downs Clemons would be put it in. But I agree that Wilson and Reshad have the "it" factor one seeks back there..

I've al;ways felt like Jones was a better SS than FS. I am not sure if T. Johnson is better, but as long as both of our safties play well I dont care who starts. This is actually one of my biggest concerns about our D.

I'm not going to be surprised if we bring back YB at SS. I like Wilson at FS.

I like the potential of Wilson. He just seems like a playmaker to me. As far a SS, we'll have to wait till training camp. If Johnson and Clemons can stay healthy, we should have good competition. I really think Bells' time as a Dolphin is up. He adds no value in coverage so why bring him back??? Safety is the one position we didn't spend a pick on but that's ok. This team really didn't do much in FA but the Draft has added a lot of talent and good camp competition at most positions. I can see this team being loaded in a few years and competing for titles. I don't mind rebuilding this team as long as we keep the core intact (long, Pouncey, Wake, Dansby, Davis). I think this team finally has a bright future and I've been waiting a long time for this feeling!!!

This is the one position I am truly worried about. Someone needs to step up and play, there are two huge questions marks at SS and FS. Everyone assumes the switch to SS is going to make Jones a pro bowler but if what the coaching staff is saying (the positions are interchangeable) then that logic is flawed.

I love Jimmy Wilson, I will root for the kid to succeed but that doesn't mean he is going too. Again, the potential is there but that doesn't always translate into solid starter.


So I hope for the sake of the passing game someone steps up their game this season or safety is going to be a liability.

How in the world does a 5th round pick on his rookie contract make 1.9m? Either that's a typo or Ireland really screwed the pooch on that contract.

You have your opinion and I have mine. After looking at what we've see on the field the last 3 years can you really name one drafted player who came in and made an impact other than Vontae Davis?

Merling - Under achieved
Odrick - Produced better than most but still somewhat of any unknown
Jones - Underachieved
Smith - had a good 2011 season after two so/so seasons
Jerry - performed better towards the end of last season
Henne - inconsistent and struggled with confidence - for me this one is directly on Sparano and Henning. How many times did you see him getting into a rhytm only to see them call several wildcat plays that failed to do much. Confidence is king for a young QB and the playcalling helped kill this guys. He had a chance at being better than avg but not with this crew of misfit coaches.

Pouncey and Davis were somewhat polished coming in and were able to make the jump to the pro level.

My point is the past regime did not coach players UP. The ones that developed did so inspite of the coaches and because they had the drive to do it on their own for the most part while culling what they could from the coaches and other vets.
