We have spent approx $50m this offseason on the following players (based on avg. salary):-

Stills – 8
Fasano 3
Michael Thomas 2
Timmons 6
J. Thomas 6
Alonso 4
Branch 9
Allen 3.5
Ted Larsen 2
William Hayes 5

Considering the upcoming draft and the strength being RB, TE, CB & DE, how would you have handled the offseason?

I would have gone:-

DJ Swearinger FS - $4.5m
Kenny Stills WR $8m
Chris Baker DT - $5.5m
Fasano TE $3m
Hayes DE $5m
Alonso MLB $4m
Michael Thomas $2m
Larry Warford $8.5m
Ronald Leary $9m

IMO this would allow us to attack the 4 positions of strength in draft. I still have a concern at LB but nobody in FA I like or believe are value for money.

How would you handle offseason?

agree on most of those don't think we've done too badly to be honest except the glaring hole at G. So yes I would have locked up either Warford or Leary or both (if cap was available) instead of Branch and taken a DE in the 1st.
Also would have like DJ Swearing instead of Allen for sure.

I like the direction for the most part. I am concerned about the guard position. Can the team really get by with serviceable guards in the AFC East which is loaded with quality defensive tackles? Is this a smokescreen to take a guard early in the draft?

I like the OP's plan better. To me, we made some good moves and some bad moves. For example, re-signing Stills, extending Reshad Jones, adding Fasano, acquiring Hayes were all sound moves. I think the cheap safety we added might be good too, but I just don't know the guy well enough to judge. But THE priority of free agency should have been to secure 2 solid to good guards. That's where the money should have been spent.

This is a phenomenal draft for LB, DE, pass rushers, CB's and S's. We don't need ALL of those positions in free agency. Fill the ones that are not abundant in the draft first, which would be LG and RG. THEN look for deals at the other positions. Having a need at DE, LB, C or S is perfectly OK. This draft has them for several rounds. But, it does NOT have guards all day. Now we'll have to reach for a guard and bypass on elite talent at marquis positions ... or once again settle for a crippled team because we tried using dumpster trash guards. Not wise IMHO.

Timmons is a great name. He used to be good. But last year his vaunted run defense disappeared, and he was bad at run stuffing. His vaunted speed also disappeared as he was no longer fast. He is bad in coverage. We paid a premium and guaranteed almost all of both years for an old LB whose last decent season was 3 years ago. I wouldn't have done that deal.

Branch is OK. He was paid $7.5M + incentives, which is fair. He was OK, but not good. He was poor against the run, and he netted 5.5 sacks I think? Given he has Suh up the middle next to him, Wake coming from the opposite side, and is lining up in the Wide 9 which is a pass rusher's dream ... I'm not overly impressed with 5.5 sacks. Re-sign him ... fine ... but don't re-sign him AND add Timmons, burning so much salary cap and locking us into two sub-par players and preventing us from drafting real difference makers at LB and DE. That seems unwise to me.

So, for me, I guess I'll wait until after the draft to re-evaluate. Perhaps there is some grand plan of which I'm not aware. Maybe they're going to swing some big trade to net us a couple more picks in the top 3 rounds. Maybe Dion Jordan is healthy and looks like a monster and they're not telling anyone so they can bluff that we need edge rushers? Maybe there are a couple of phenomenal guards in Canada that have handshake deals to join us and we don't need any guards? But ... all of that seems highly unlikely.

More likely, we're locked into passing up elite talent at pass rusher, LB, DE, CB, S and TE to select a Forrest Lamp in round 1 and Isaac Asiata in round 3. I mean ... they're fine players, but it means we pass up guys like TJ Watt or Taco Charlton in round 2 and someone like Sidney Jones (who will be injured his entire rookie season) in round 3. Hey, who needs potential All-Pros anyway.

I would have spent more on the O-line. The Dolphins season went from suck to playoff once Gase realizes his playmaker on offense wasn't Tannehill right arm but the O-line and Jay ability to run the ball.

Defensively almost anything would have helped although getting that 2 gapper NT to take the pressure off of Suh would have been a higher priority.
The rest is meh..

I would've gotten one top guard. Tunsil will be great but once Pouncey goes down, you're going to have a mediocre center surrounded by mediocre/rookie guards. I would've certainly taken a guard over Branch. We got Hayes and the draft is deep with DE's. I don't mind having Timmons. We needed to get someone at lb. That unit was just grossly underfunded last year.

That's not how we run things upfront. We don't have 2 gapping DL's anywhere on the line.

You can't just say we can sign a free agent what another team already signed them for. You would have to beat New Orleans 4yr 34m contract to Warford and Denver's 4yr 36m contract to Leary. Bidding against a other team ready to sign them would drive their contracts even higher. You can't just assume the other team didn't even bother picking up the phone and let the Dolphins swoop in and sign them.

Your right you can't assume anything but we can't even assume that the FO tried to sign any of the top Guards either. No runners no show of interest doesn't sound good

I agree with all of this, however, I don't agree signing Branch and Timmons prevents us from taking a LB or DE early in the draft. In fact, I expect us to take those two positions early

That's part of the problem. Aside from Suh none of the interior DLine-men deserve to be starting in the NFL.
