How would YOU make our defense better?

Keep a base of 3-4, but if they wanna run 4-3 at times go for it. Anyways, I'd cut McDaniel and Bell to free up $, sign Cliff Avril (DE or LB), try to get back Soliai and Langford, but if unable to keep one or the other, I think Odrick can start. I'd have Reshad slide to his natural position of SS and let him try the season there. Next move would be Reggie Nelson and I'd be okay with Clemons backing up either S spot.

Thats only FA, so in the draft I'd look to add depth to our LB core, find a young nickle corner, and maybe add a S.

cutting sean smith is retarted(no offense). why would you just outright cut the 2nd best player in your secondary. the guy gets better every year. At his age, size, and price, you wont find another press corner available like him. he shouldn't be playing safety or nickel, smith is a #2 boundary PRESS corner. he and vontae are going to get beat sometimes because of their style of play, but they also make plays. theyre still growing. were moving away from nolans cover-2 stuff so the pressure on the safeties wont be as much. also coyle is a secondary guy. reshad jones and chris clemons and smith and vontae will benefit a lot this year from a full offseason with him.

want to improve the defense? add a young pass rusher or 2. stop putting money into d-tackles. get a pass rusher. it doesn't need to be mario williams at 70 million dollars. just draft an actuall pass rusher and hit on the pick. our defense has been a run stopping defense, but this is a pass-happy league. lets change the focus of the defense.

also jimmy wilson has plenty of upside. i think coyle will have fun with him. besides he was rusty and again: no offseason for a 7th round pick... surprised he made the team ya dig?

I'd go after AVRIL bigtime. I'd also cut BELL: he can't cover his butt anymore, and TEs everywhere love him. I'd also cut MISI: he's a bust as a pass-rusher, and that's the name of the game today. IKOOKOO IMMA FRENCHFRY, or whatever his name is, would be right behind MISI: he's useless, and had shown NOTHING worth mentioning. I'd go after a F/A FS and do what it took to get him. He starts, CLEMMONS learns as his back-up, and JONES goes to SS where he belongs.

Unlike many of you, I consider S SMITH to be a solid CB. He would REALLY prosper from a good FS. Beyond this, he's not being used effectively. I'm talking TE here! And especially N.E., who plays 2 good ones in its base offense: IF MIAMI can't beat N.E., "also ran" will be all it has to look foward to. I saw S SMITH play T GONZALEZ once, and he held GONZALEZ to 5 or 6 catches for under 100 Yards. He has some heighgt, and those semi-"ally-oop" passes just didn't get it done. Against N.E., I'd have him cover whichever TE lined up wide. and I'd play SMITH to the inside. Because on any "out" pattern (whatever distance) SMITH would be able to step inside of the TE, and at 6'3" tall, force BRADY to throw a super-perfect pass...each time, every time or it's a possible Pick-6. Make N.E. EARN those completions.

And as to W ALLEN, as long as he can cover, he stays. He's a solid, veteran CB who can play what I considere to be a new position in 21st Century NFL football, i.e., "slot CB". No one else on MIAMI's Roster has been able to do nearly as well at it. This should be ALLEN's role. A 3rd CB (i.e., a 3rd "perimeter CB") is needed. I don't know if WILSON can be that player: I think that he MIGHT! CARROL is NOT.

IMO keep Bell if he restructures his contract, and possibly get Nelson?
I also say keep Smith, he may be over rated, but hes cheap and could be a 3rd string CB
and put Smith as 2nd string, because he has some upsides to him :D
All iN all our D is good as it is, its just a good offense makes a D better cuz the D wont be on the field as much!
Peyton would be the best pick up for the D :)

Thank you! the hate for Smith is unneeded on here. Some of you guys would seriously rather have Jimmy Wilson starting opposite Vontae... smh

For all of you aking why I would trade Smith.....I would trade him because sucks, in my opnion. He drops too many sure ints, and we have Wilson waiting in the wings, who has shown some pretty good upside. He can play nickel.

I agree with this but smith along with the rest of the db's got their act together. the offseason was no friend. I actually noticed smith getting more physical at the LOS using his long arms to slow the start of the reciever. One more season for him IMO. New regime with an attacking style defense could change things for him. Plus I think Wilson will push for some time this year. I will not be surprised if we draft a CB and I wouldnt be suprised if we got one at #8/9 in the draft. in fact, itI may be more likely we get a CB than a DE (Coples) at 8/9.

most people here i think would be more comfortable rolling with smith as a starter then koa misi.

Add another speed rusher opposite Wake, and find another starting safety to start opposite Bell.
Put Jimmy Wilson in Sean Smith's CB position and let him develop. He has good ball hawk instincts.

Sean Smith is a contain and tackle CB. We need a man to man talent there.

Pat Kirwin and T Rock made a comment that they see J.Wilson as a starting safety for us in the near future. Interesting.

Sign Mario Williams.
Draft Dre Kirkpartrick and move Vontae Davis to safety.
Williams can play multiple defenses and would instantly be our best OLB. Wake would see more one on one.
Kirkpatrick is a #1 corner. Davis is playmaker if he's in position, and is a hard hitting sure fired tackler.
Smith is solid #2 CB. He is still very raw, yet his height alone makes it hard for QBs.
Paul Solia would be gone, with Williams taking his money.
Possibly Kendall Langford too.
Even if you leave Davis at CB, Kirkpatrick and he would be a awesome tandem.
Bell would need to restructure or be let go.
Bring Will Allen back as NB.

Hopefully have enough cash to sign Flynn or maybe draft a QB in the 2nd.
Draft offense in the draft after round 1. WR, TE, WR, RT, QB. BPA/RD. Any order.

BTW, this is just an idea. Im on the idea of spending money on Peyton, if released.
