Howard Schnellenberger's son dies of cancer

After another hard-fought Florida Atlantic University football game, there was always a tender moment when FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger would seek out his son, Stephen, who was confined to a wheelchair due to a lifelong battle with a rare form of cancer.

Howard Schnellenberger would lean down and wrap an arm around Stephen's shoulder and talk to his son.

Howard Schnellenberger prides himself on creating tough football players, but he would often say that Stephen was the bravest and toughest person he knew.

Stephen Schnellenberger died Sunday at age 48.

For a father to outlive one of his sons is tough enough but to see one suffer all of those years is gutwrenching.

My condolences to Howard who I will always respect because he put UM football on the map.
