Howard Schnellenberger's son dies of cancer

After another hard-fought Florida Atlantic University football game, there was always a tender moment when FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger would seek out his son, Stephen, who was confined to a wheelchair due to a lifelong battle with a rare form of cancer.

Howard Schnellenberger would lean down and wrap an arm around Stephen's shoulder and talk to his son.

Howard Schnellenberger prides himself on creating tough football players, but he would often say that Stephen was the bravest and toughest person he knew.

Stephen Schnellenberger died Sunday at age 48.

Howard Schnellenberger was such a big part of the 72 Dolphins team.

My thoughts are with him and the rest of the Schnellenberger family in their time of loss.

Sad. Maybe some of these inconsiterate people around here will learn what cancer really is and that it has nothing to do with someone in the locker room. I have two very close family members suffering from that disease and see people on here using and giving thanks to people for making up false definitions of it. My prayers go out to the Schnellenbergers.
