Huizenga said on WQAM-AM Wednesday morning that he would give "10-to-1 odds" that the Dolphins would make the playoffs next season.

Do you think he really thinks we don't have a very good shot or do you think he ment to say 1-10 odds? This really worries me if the owner doesn't even have faith in his team. Did anyone here this?

Yes i was listening to the radio when they got him on the pohne. The maddog talked to him. He said that Marino resigning would not hurt Miami's chances next year. He said if he was to bet it, he would bet 10-1 that Miami would make the playoffs.

oh come on, use a bit of that head of yours. Would Wayne ever say something about there being a good chance the Fins werent going to the playoffs next year? that would be just ridiculous

Yeah, but 10-1 odds means that if they would play the 2004 season 10 times the Dolphins would only make it once.

is that what it means? Im not much of a betting man, so when i read it I figured he meant it positively

Im pretty sure no matter what he said, if it was mis quoted or what, he meant that his Fins are going to make it in '04

but the average joe (me) wouldnt have taken 1-10 as a good thing. That sounds like a 1 out of 10 type of thing.

Maybe he was assuming the fans werent educated(me) and this was the best way of expressing it?

10 to 1 odds that Miami makes the playoffs means that if you bet 100 bucks on miami getting to the playoffs, you'd win $10 because it was 10 times more likely that Miami would make the playoffs than not. Thats what Huizenga meant.

Seriously guys, I'm not sure where some of you come up with some of the stuff you post. It's like that "telephone" game some of us played when we were kids; you get a whole bunch of people together, say one thing to the first person, and then have them pass it along from person to person without each person hearing what the previous one actually said. By the time the thing actually gets to the end it goes from being something like "My dog has fleas" to "I like tomato and cheese."

What Wayne was clearly saying here was that-- hypothetically speaking-- he'd be willing to take anyone's bet and pay them 10 times that amount should the 'Fins miss the playoffs next year. In other words, he was stating that he firmly believes that the 'Fins will make the playoffs. BTW, I'm not sure I've ever heard of anyone giving 1 to 10 odds on anything as that would mean that you are offering to have someone pay you ten times whatever you offer them in a bet; to my knowledge 1 to 10 odds simply don't exist as a term (although, in practice, they do for the house when they're the ones laying the odds.)

Hopefully that clears this thing up. One more time though, just in case: Wayne was CLEARLY stating that he strongly believes the 'Fins will go to the playoffs next year.

I hate to split hairs with you once again tonight but that's not what 10 to 1 odds mean in Vegas terms. Whenever I go (about three to four times a year) I like to drop $20 on a five team parlay just for craps and giggles. At the Bellagio (the last place I stayed and made one of these bets) the odds were 27 to 1 on a five team parlay which meant that if I were to guess right on all five points within the parlay I would win $540 (minus juice.) The odds are always in the favor of the bettor and not in the favor of the house. In this case, Wayne is "the house" as he is the one giving the odds therefore he is hypothetically offering 10 times any bet amount put forth by any hypothetical person if the 'Fins should fail to make the playoffs.

Cranx is dead on right....in both posts.

Why in the heck would he shoot himself in the foot and doom ticket sells by saying anything other than a positive comment.

People love misery. They love to overanalyse and always put a negative spin on it...you know what they say: misery loves company.

I saw many posters reacting negatively to the Marino hiring ("ridiculous", "figurehead" etc) yet the same ones also proclaim doon after Marino quit.

Some people love negativity....
