are the only sure starters back (I'm pencilling Phillps in as a starter).

In the secondary, Brent Grimes is the only proven cornerback, and his game has shown natural signs of slowing. No one has been a bigger fan of Grimes than me right from his eye-opening play in his first training camp. But business is business. He couldn't have really expected to cash this final year of his contract. The Dolphins can re-do his deal, if he allows. Or they can save $8 million by designating him as one of the two allowed post-June 1 cuts designated before that date.

With that $8 million, the Dolphins could go a long way to signing a couple of veteran (read: old) from new defensive coordinator Vance Joseph's former team in Cincinnati. Joseph was the secondary coach of decent free-agent cornerbacks Leon Hall and Adam Jones and safety Reggie Nelson. New coaches typically want a couple former players on board to help the new team learn the system. Hall or Jones can fit a role at cornerback. Nelson plays the deep safety role, which which fits with Reshad Jones playing the more aggressive safety. Each is expected to cost in the modest neighborhood of two years, $10 million, according to the salary-cap website, overthecap.com.

That puts the Dolphins in position either to sign a higher-priced free agent (Sean Smith? Trumaine Johnson? Janoris Jenkins?)

don't sleep on eli apple...once teams get done seeing that the pure boundary options at the top of the class are lacking size and this kid tests exceptionally well in terms of fluidity for any scheme at his size this kid will be a fast riser on pure boundary talent and upside alone...

teams love talent and upside and this kids got tons of it

pidgeon holing corners for a scheme is physical tools wise usually about lack of hip fluidity and top end speed...this kid lacks neither

the only real knock here is some situational awareness but the counter to that is the 2 years of college football youth and banking on it developing with time and game reps

It will very interesting to see what happens...

I think Brent would consider restructuring, but not sure if Miko would allow it. It also doesn't help that his wife has been a source of contention not only for the team, but the media that covers the team as well. Overall a toxic relationship that may be worth moving on from if there are viable options to fill the gap.

I think drafting a CB in the first 2 rounds is paramount...Taylor isn't it and while Bobby McCain has show promise and has a desired skill set, he is more of a slot corner then someone who can work on the boundary.

Free Safety is just as big an issue and should be upgraded as well.

If his wife has any say in those negotiations he needs to leave immediately.

Do you saddle Gase with Miko in his first year? I would try to trade him for a late pick and start over though it could make the rebuild job harder in a sense.

If he is unwilling to restructure then he needs to go...too many issue with his family and their relationship with the phins. Wouldn't typically hold a family member against a player, but this is a unique situation that has become contentious over the last year.

I'm actually optimistic we can make some solid improvements in our secondary this year....I am 100% neutral on keeping Grimes or not, and to be clear it's only because of Miko that I wouldn't care if he walks....

I think he's still got talent, and would make a great piece, but the baggage is starting to weigh as much as his contribution at this point...

If Jack/Smith are gone at 8, I am all about getting Apple or Hargreaves if either are still available....

Gase has enough on his plate, last thing he needs is continued dissension in the locker room. Try and trade him but can't hold the team up if there is no legitimate offers, cut and move on. I doubt he goes for a pay cut. I keep hearing Miko talk about the Jets, she will push for him to go there.

apple higher ceiling Hargreaves higher floor

theres an awful lot of Hargreaves in press like apple tape too...he just shows better awareness and instincts on tape than apple does right now...and apples a pure boundary corner...has all the tools for it...but his ceiling will depend on awareness strides

I don't think any corner will test better than apple this week though...not for anyone near that size...I expect him to rock out the footwork and flip his hips/transition on a dime out of a very smooth pedal...and run low 4.4's worst case

Depends on where you classify Ramsey...safety or corner.

Ramsey won the ACC long jump and was top 10 in the 100...ridicules athlete.

As far as pure corner...Apple appears to be the guy who could shoot up draft boards...I still like Hargreaves better as I feel he faced strong comp, but Apple has that desired size and athlete you want.

I don't view ramsey as a pure boundary corner....I think he's best facing the action as much as possible...I see just as much risk as upside at corner

best trait is pure versatility but might be jack of all trades master of none...on upside though well worth top 10 pick...so gifted physically

imo scheme will matter on the return

We need a boundary corner in the worst way is all I know, no messing around this time and signing a slot corner to play outside. If Grimes leaves that 2 needs unless you want to give the job to Lippett which is dangerous ala Taylor.

If you release Grimes you better make sure you can get one in FA one with some size would be nice and not sure there is any gurantee you going to get one just like we couldnt get a LB last year.

Find a defensive coordinator that will use him the same as Mathieu and you should reap rewards.

Miami should wait til after they sniff the cb market at the combine before they make any grimes decision...it's going to be quite expensive for a top shelf guy with youth should they hit...which again im seriously doubting will happen...but if one does in the 26 or 27 year old range expect serious competition

The combine numbers will not alter my view on the top CB.

VH3 has elite instincts and excellent footwork with little to no wasted movement. He's a natural. Unless Ramsey or Jack fall to #8, take VH3 and rejoice. VH3 will also fit our scheme as an off-ball CB who will play well within C2 coverage.
