1. In many ways, Monday's Dolphins dealings told you everything about this time of year. They released cornerback Dmitri Patterson due to his age (30), contract ($5.5 million) and health issues (missed most of last year). They then signed safety
Louis Delmas because of his age (25), contract ($3.5 million) and despite his health issues (both knees).
Delmas does fit three of the four criteria for which you go shopping. He's a productive player last year for Detroit (68 tackles, three interceptions, two sacks, eight passes defensed). He's a good buy with the one-year, $3.5 million contract. He's a positive presence, at least according to Detroit (come on, like we know?)
But on the fourth criteria of health, you see why he's coming on the cheap. He missed five games after having surgery on his left knee in 2011. He missed half the year after a right-knee surgery in 2012. He played every game last year, which alleviates some concern. But he was listed with knee issues on every injury report last season because he missed practices nearly every week.
The Dolphins' doctors checked out those knees. Unlike the way it's often presented, doctors don't say a player passed or failed a physical. They give a number grade from one to seven on a player's health, from perfect to a red flag, and it's up to the general manager to decide from there. We don't know what Delmas graded out as, but considering his contract it can't be great.
The Dolphins have been fortunate with recent marked-down buys. Brent Grimes comes to mind. But his was an Achilles injury and if the surgery is done properly players come back from that. Knee problems are more difficult to gauge - especially for someone who has had serious issues with them and played through them in his free-agent season.
This is the game that's played in free agency. Patterson is gone. Delmas is here. Delmas isn't a financial gamble. But he's a positional one. They let go of Chris Gamble, whom they didn't see have much production but was a regular starter. You'd think GM Dennis Hickey expects to draft a safety with a decent chance of playing as a rookie. They might need him depending how Delmas' knees are.
