Would you replace Philbin with Payton in or out of season?

For the record I would

Of course, but I think he'd have eyes for the Giants job.

I am on the Teryl Austin, Hue Jackson, Eric Mangini, Gus Malzahn bandwagon. Mix in Payton and I would be happy with those four. I think we need experience this time, but I think Austin is a rising star. What a resume and if this franchise needs to get more out of Suh, he is no doubt the guy.

Don't know why there is so much hate for Mangini. People tend to forget that he drafted Revis and David Harris, and built a pretty damn good Jets team there in the late 2000's, particularly on defense. People also forget that the Jets were 8-3 in 2008 before Favre completely went to trash (partially because of injury) through no fault of Mangini. He's a pretty good coach IMO.

I know he has had two cracks already. However, I really think his time away from football, working under Harbaugh and now DC again in SF has made him even a better candidate.

If you watch and listen to ESPN a lot and carefully, you hear other talking heads...unsolicited...mention intelligent points that Mangini brought up in production meetings...and this is years later.

I love the fact the man has a strong relationship with Tannenbaum, Aponte, Higgins and Ross. It is a chance to have the organization "all in" for once.

I do like Payton a lot. Dream candidate. I am also very, very high on Jackson and think Austin is that next "rising star".

I agree with most of this, and see eye to eye on most things, but tell me why Gus? I am not a fan of bringing in college coaches unless they have strong NFL ties because in most cases it's not the head coach but the staff they can build that makes shapes the team. This IMO is Philbin's biggest downfall, he has selected poor coaches to work under him for the most part and put too much faith in them.

Malzan has only been a college HC since 2013 and only 10 years removed from being a HS coach. He has zero NFL experience so how strong is his network to build a strong staff? He runs a spread option offense and as we are already seeing in Philly teams are learning how to shut it down. I see a lot of people throwing his name out there and I just don't get it.

If I am looking at college coaches I am putting David Shaw at the top of my list. The style of play he runs at Stanford would translate to the NFL and he has NFL ties as he coached in the NFL from 1997-2006.

In a heartbeat. May the Curse of Ireland make it so.

Hell no.

If we thought Bullygate was a big deal in that Philbin didn't have insight into the locker and we fell out of favor in the league with Goodell, why the **** would anyone want a coach who actually knew illegal activity was going on with their players, yet did nothing to stop it and was proven to have lied to the league about it in the process.

Payton is the only head coach to have been suspended by the league and is an arrogant person who "thinks" he is smarter than everybody in the room. He would not work with what we already have in place in our FO.

Not to mention he is a descendant of the Parcell's coaching tree. Someone who we all believe who's philosophies has been passed by the game which is becoming evident by his 3-7 record in his past 10 games. This doesn't even touch on his rumored drug use.

Might as well bring Ireland back with him too. :bobdole:

GTFO. Even more insanity as to why Mangini should be avoided like the plague. Perfect reason why NOT to.

All true. But Payton can gamecall. He can motivate players and he can utilise their potential. We played them in Philbin's second year (iirc) and they totally out-schemed us for a comfortable win. We brought the house and Payton started having Brees drop passes into Sproles behind the box. We got crucified. They're not great now because of bad drafting/FA and a crap DC, plus Brees is ageing. But Payton is a very good coach.
