I don't get it-Marshall gets 5 million a year to be a nickel back and...

Bills fan here obviously.

This has been your best move to date.

A good NB is just as important as your two top QBs.

Looks at two offenses in the AFCE two essentially spreads in NE and Buff. You will be in the Nickle a majority of the time. It is a passing league and a Good NB is harder to find than a good OG.

Seriously, nickel CB's are becoming extremely important positions on a defense in today's NFL.

But like Phinatic pointed out, I think this move was made to solidify the FS position and I think this was a real good move by Ireland bringing him in. The money is solid, we didn't overspend and we didn't lowball him. I do think more than ever that Bell will be cut/restructured.

As for Sean Smith, I don't know what his value is right now but we don't have enough good CB's to be tossing him around in trades. I mean he makes less than 600K next year, that is a steal. We will draft a CB also.

yeah but smith is in the last year of his deal and if he continues the level of play we've gotten to date and you add a guy like marshall with his versatility that makes a sean smith who's greatest asset since he's been in this league is his versatility expendable...especially if you don't plan on dumping money in his pocket this next offseason...which off what i've seen he'll never ever be able to man the #1 corner and get the job done and he's entirely too soft to play an every down freee safety so really what you have is a guy going forward than can't play anything consistently...if you make him a nickle/dime safety your not paying that guy big money i can tell ya that...eventually thats what i see him becoming anyways a package specific bring in an extra db to play a safety like roll db...

and i'm sorry but thats not ultra valuable in this league...rodney culver is pretty much that guy already and with more physicality and tackling...

I hope Marshall becomes a starting safety for us because he could be pretty good there. I pray to god he is not our starting corner because he was absolutely abused as a starter in Carolina opposite Gamble. The reason a nickel corner is not worth as much as a starting corner is because he plays lesser receivers plain and simple. Is it important of course as is third wr but you dont pay your third receiver like a starter either

People, remember when Benny Sapp was our nickle corner? remember teams abusing him. I like the signing of Marshall.

Intercepions and forced fumbles win games. Lots of OGs in this draft that can start for lot less money Like Glenn from Georgia can play OG/OT and he is a beast. Maybe able to get him at bottom of first round and early second. Spend 7 Mill on a right tackle if you want to spend 7M like Winston.

Gives us depth at DB.

Every time a DB went down last year, the wheels fell off our game ... especially at the beginning of the season as several went down.

However ... this signing all our Free Agents from the Bargain Bin ... is starting to become a FO Trend!! Don't know why, but after last year, I kinda expected it ... sigh!!

We let Ben Grubbs sign in New Orleans for a mere 7 million a year. I'm confused. Someone help me out. Why are we giving Marshall who isn't going to be a starter, 5 million a year when we could of easily let Will Allen and Jimmy Wilson fight it out in camp. Ben Grubbs is one of the best guards in the league and all it would of taken to get him was only 7 million a year. That's cheap imo. I hope we weren't saving our money to piss it away on Flynn.
Players don't want to come to Miami when it's run by clowns. Dolphins must overpay to entice players. We were once a classy organization, those times are far gone. Until the dolphin "culture" changes expect more of the same.

Who have we overpaid tho? Who hasn't got overpaid in FA?

i
Richard Marshall will he our starting FS....Book it.

That may be true. Doesn't make it a shrewd pickup.

We are buying Marshall at a higher price than he's ever been worth. If you assigned an over/under on his salary at the start of free agency, we comfortably found the over.

You win big with great players scattered throughout your roster, not modest patchwork upgrades. Ireland seems to have a check list and no comprehension of the big picture. He's a swell general manager if your goal is to avoid a 3-13 caliber roster but never threaten the reverse.

Jason Allen is the last guy we had who was debated as cornerback or safety. By definition, a combo type does not have special ability, otherwise it would be obvious where he fits.

Paying $5 million a year for a decent talent like Richard Marshall would be like me watching a team win three consecutive games as an underdog, and then deciding it's time to jump in and and bet big on them as a home 10 point favorite. Even if it works, it's negative expectancy, something that will grind you out as a loser in the long run. Trust me, there are guys in Las Vegas who absolutely have that mindset, always overpaying and finding the wrong situational spot. Unfortunately, we have a general manager who shares the same faults, a basic lack of instinct and poor concept of timing and value.

You dpnt pay 5 mill a year fro depth he has to be a starter. He is good depth at corner until he has to start in the past he has been pretty bad as a starter

This guy has a point you can't tie up 5 mil a year to a nickel corner

i wouldn't be surprised if sean smith is traded given this signing...that said if he is the nickle cb do you realize how much your 3rd corner is on the field in todays nfl??? a ton...many a team has gone to this spread you out and get your 3rd corner on the field offense and they try to exploit it...if he can lock it down its well worth it...at $5 mil per though i'm thinking he's being brought here for more than just the nickle job if that money # is right

Agreed 100% about the importance of nickel corner.

Not sure why we would trade Smith though. He isnt incredibly awesome or anything, but hes not useless and it doesnt make sense to make a hole that needs to be filled just for the sake of it. Its not like we would get much value for him.
