And this will lead to him getting cut IMO. He's a big hitter but he's unquestionably a huge liability in our pass game. He's a fan favorite but with all of the shortcomings in our secondary in regards to coverage, we need DB's that can cover more than we need guys that can lay the wood. There is no need to just keep him for his ST prowess since he's not even our best ST player.

he's a special teams player... never has been anymore or less, he is not an NFL calibre safety and is too small to play LB.

I think his year as a Wanny LB screwed and skewed his development as a safety...His only real chance of making the squad is injury or as a STer...He'll need another year of work at safety before he can be truely evaluated...

Just count his name as another Wanny mistake that turned a career into dust....

i think hes got some cover skills, its just new schemes and trying to do all those old safety things again... i think he'll make the team, play special teams well and learn as he goes, he wont be asked to play much safety, we'll have tebucky and shulters with tillman and bell behind them (does bell play SS or FS?) either way i think he'll improve as camp goes on and he'll make the team...

thts unfair... he's never been anymore than a STer IMO.

I saw him being fairly active on Special Teams. Was in on alot of tackles.I beleive he will make it just for the fact he can tackle on Special teams and alot of the other DB's aren't much better than him.

Well I'm not sure if he'll be cut...he's a very good special teams player. I think it will depend on how many LB's and Safeties Saban decides to keep, if there's an open space for Bua I think Saban will keep him. Most teams have 1 or 2 guys who's sole purpose is to play special teams but never get to actually play much on the field, Bua can be the Larry Izzo of the Phins

If he is not capable of being an NFL safety and we keep him only for his ST ability (a la Wanny), that would mean we cut some other player that could probably give us more. We already have too many holes in our secondary that we can't afford to keep a player that can't give us anything if we need them to actually play on defense. For some reason, I see him getting cut, signing on with another team that will try to convert him back to LB.

Bua is not making the squad, just like Kay Jay Harris isn't.

I agree. And the guy that wants to blame Wanny for Bua's non coverage ability is just silly. Welker also might not make the team.

I gotta disagree there, Welker easily makes the team because he shows that ability to break one at anytime on returns, plus he has proven he can handle WR duty. Personally i think if given enough practice, he could be a Wayne Chrebet.

Bua is on the line....great special teams and that's it. At least Larry Izzo was a decent linebacker too!

Welker shows upside potential as a WR and is the best KR/PR we've had since Fulton Walker...he definitely stays.

I agree on your assesment. Players are only affective in systems that highlights there abilities. In this case I don't think Bua fits the present Saban defensive system in the secondary. So his best shot to make the team is on special teams.

I'm not sure if he's fast enough to play SS in the NFL. I do know that if he had an entire offseason to do speed work and he dropped some weight he'd have a better shot as a 4th or 5th (if the team keeps that many) safety for the team.

We all know he's fantastic as a special teamer and with more speed would be a SS that's feared for his hitting.

But, I do think it's very possible he's cut this year. We haven't see yet what proclivity Saban has for keeping just special teamers (Wanny did hurt the team with keeping TOO many ST guys and not enough quality position backups). I think that this might be a reason Welker and the team have put so much emphasis on him playing WR regularly. We shall see.

Question: can a player (like a Bua) be signed to the practice squad after he's played one full season on the big team as long as he hasn't played more than 3 years in the league?
