i dont understand why u would release a player i mean i understand if they suck and no body wants them but a player like sam madison i mean u could get like a draft pick for him who cares if its a 6th or a 7th round draft pick ur still getting something instead of nothing

the catch is this though. if a team knows that you don't want him anymore they won't give you anything in a trade and you're forced to release him. Sam Madison's trade value is very low....I think we'd be lucky to get a 5th rd pick for him.

Ya... a perfect example of this was Tebucky Jones last year. The Saints were trying to just get like a 6th round pick for him... but no one bit because everyone knew that they were just gunna release him anyway. Saban waited it out and they eventually cut T-Jones allowing us to grab him for no compensation...

yea i guess i understand that now but i think some1 would trade for madison bc he did have a good couple of last weeks and if he fits into some1s system theyll love him i mean he's old but he's still def a top 15 corner corner so some1 will trade for him instead of havin to fight the field of teams that will want him

Also, if you wait till a player is released then you are immediately in a contract restructuring of that player since his current contract is immediately voided. If you trade for a player, then you have to assume his contract.

So if a player has a high dollar value and is on the trading block you may not offer anything because you dont want to assume his contract.

Well, the key to do that... would be to "make it known" that we want to bring Sam back (even if we dont... Sabans good at that), but that he would be on the trading block for the right price. It takes away a teams power to sit and wait for him to be released...

It actually has nothing to do with teams knowing that we don't want him.

It has to do with the contract. If Sam was on a 5 year minimum contract and made it known that he was willing to play out the contract with any new team then YES he would have trade value.

But, the reason we don't want him is that his skills don't match his contract numbers. No other team would trade for Sam if they needed to take on his current contract and they know we won't keep him at that number anyway. If another team wanted him, he would first need to restructure before anyone would trade for him. He has no reason to restructure and then let the Phins trade him where they want. It makes more sense for him to allow the Phins to release him and then go to other teams as an unrestricted free agent.
