Pro Bowler
The Bills game put the season into perspective for me recently and I understand that there are some screws loose, a few players that don't fit the roster, and a coach's relationship with the NFL earlier in its "gettin' to know you" stage. My expectations have been brought down, regardless of the incredible factors in our game (rb, de, lb, te, dt).
Don't get me wrong, I want to win the Superbowl this year, just like every year, and with every game that goal will be in my mind. But now, unlike last week, I am not so sure we're going to do it. I was blinded by the talent on the team and saw no reason why we couldn't win it all, just like Saban said he doesn't walk off the field thinking we didn't have good enough players to win the game. The problem is the system, and regardless of how good these players are, its the system they need to fit into and in that regard everyone is shaped differently. Take comfort in the fact that Saban knows his system well and will find the right pieces with which to acquire the Lombardi trophy
But in terms of the future, logic allows me to be legitimately excited. In terms of real, wonderful, homerun talent, we have a good amount. Of that amount there are at least 2 guaranteed "long haulers" who are young and outstanding. I'm referring to Ronnie Brown who just makes me smile when I think about the highlights he's going to create...he's just so good at all the aspects of his position, I can't believe our team got to have this player, seriously...and Randy McMichael, the "nicest" tight end in the AFC, and finally financially content. These guys are going to contend for the top spot at there position in this league for years to come, consistently, because they're beasts.
Chris Chambers needs to step it up big time. He should be on that list, it should be 3 players, but he's yet to do it right. Maybe next year with a go to receiver from the draft or free agency he'll do it, or maybe with a quarterback from the same pools, but who knows? I can't wait to see how it develops with Linehan.
David Boston. I know we all just wish he'd blow up. It doesn't look like he will, but who knows, that's a chained animal right there. What if he catches some balls in a game, and, like, runs after the catch? We deserve some of that.
We've got Channing Crowder who just might get there, he is gifted and has outstanding tools, but we're not certain. Travis Daniels will improve, but again not a sure thing. Roth isn't yet, I don't think, playing in the position he's intended for, but he's getting playing time, as are our 3rd and 4th rounders, and that's the best thing you can do to get them better. (See David, you just put Vernon in, somewhere, and you let him play, let him think he's as good as his pick says he his, and let him get better) This makes me think that Manny Wright isn't quite as ready as the others, but we saw him move around in the preseason. Even if his output and energy didn't last that long, his freshness showed serious flashes of brilliance and that could be an incredibly effective DT for so many years to come, and talk about a steal, but again, who knows?
Coach Saban says that the goal of a teacher is to motivate the student to want to learn. He will be much more effective if his mindset is learning to get better and not some coaches yelling at me to get my technique different and making me watch move movies of games. I hope you get my point.
We have proven men who have wanted to learn. Grown students, if you will, and they are the best teachers because they show you the importance of things like technique and dilligent work, but they also lead by example. Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas, Junior Seau, Ricky Williams, Sam Madison, maybe even Keith Traylor. These guys are serious veterens with serious accolades and serious current production. Plus, they work the hardest and bring the biggest dogs to the fight, so our young talents have the best teaching from all angles; they've got the veterens showing them how to do it and the genius with his likeminded assistant coaches motivating the players to get better.
Imagine if Ronnie gets better! He's going to, but visualize that back right now because you can actually watch NFL production of his and it is outstanding. But its those little things like the fact that he and McMichael are most certainly discussing blocking philosophy with my man Hudson Houck, and his new NFL insider competition with a new Williams, one who can teach him so many more tricks and insights than could the other one.
We've got draft picks and free agents coming up, a whole bunch of them, and through it all players like Ronnie and Randy will be scoring the touchdowns. Hopefully Channing, Travis and Manny will be keeping 23 and 81 in the game all day, but who knows?
All I know is there are some serious reasons to be excited about the next 6+ years of this organization. We can chalk up some gems on the roster over the next few years. We're all but guaranteed to score them with Saban and Mueller draft planning and diving into free agency together. And we've got hall of famer veterens to coach the rest for the next few years.
But don't forget, during this year and the next few years those veterens are going to be leading by example as well, which will lead to production, which could lead to wins.
The year still isn't over, but at least I know that if we don't win the superbowl, its not going to be a nerve-racking offseason.
The offseason is long and now we can enjoy it regardless.
