I would love moving Suh to DE in Cam Wake's absence and insert 2nd round pick Jordan Phillips into Suh's spot on the starting line up. I like a line of OV-Phillips-Mitchell/Mosley-Suh over OV-Mitchell-Suh-Shelby/McCain. I think Suh's agile enough to play on the edge. We invested a high draft pick on Philips so plug him in and see what he's got since they were so confident in drafting that high. It makes us a lot bigger & stout along the Line of scrimmage and should make it harder to for people to run on us what you think? I look at Suh as a smaller finesse defensive tackle and not a true space eater like a Soliai or Wilfork so why not convert him into a big DE? I've been mulling over this while people were running over us before Cam who was a liability in the run game even got injured but now that he's out its a no brained to me, I really don't want Shelby & them starting. To me they're good as depth/rotational subs. What you think? I bet Suh would make a great D end!

So basically a 5-2 front without a D end with a blue chip player out of place. Can't get behind it, but I applaud the thinking outside of the box

Would he do a better job than Shelby or Fede? Probably... But he's a monster where he's at, not meant to be a true de. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing some packages like that though

Mitchell is the weak link in the line. Get him out ASAP.

Our biggest problem right now is stopping runs up the middle, between the tackles. I do not think removing the best DT in the NFL from the middle of the line is a good solution to that problem.

with a 5 man DL.. I'd go w/ a bear front w/ Phillips at NT then Suh & Fede straight up over the guards. Rotate Shelby, C McCain, & Vernon as the 2 edge rushers.

Though, you could go with a 4-2-5... Fede, Shelby, McCAin, & Vernon would rotate as DE's. Hull, Vigil, Misi, & Hewitt could rotate as the LB's. M Thomas IMO would be the best candidate to fill the S/LB hybrid like Bucannon in AZ.

Tactically speaking from an offense's POV, it's easier to nullify the impact of 4-3 DE than it is a 3-tech DT who can quickly create pressure directly up the middle. Also take into account that OV isn't a very good run defender on top of Phillips inexperience at DT (a very difficult position to learn) and we'd have significant problems opposite Suh b/w those DL's and our LB's.

How about turning Earl Mitchell sideways so he takes up more space?

Get Mitchell out. He sucks. Shelby has been solid vs the run no need to bench him, replace Mitchell with Phillips and see what happens. Can't get much worse anyway.

I really think our D line has been pretty solid. Except for a few big runs that were given up by the LB and secondary, our line has had a lot of short yardage stops. It doesn't help when your secondary keeps giving up long passes on 3rd down. Anyway, we're not constantly getting gashed in the middle for 6 and 7 yards like we were last year. It's mostly outside and off tackle runs breaking through the second and 3rd level.

Could be wrong but I believe before Cam Wake got hurt Shelby was getting a good amount of snaps because we were getting gashed by running the ball. Shelby was a good run defender from what I have gathered which leads me to believe a line like this would be more effective for a passing down rather than base defense. McCain is definitely not quite the situational pass rusher that cam wake Is but my point is that Shelby was valuable before wake went down. I wouldn't want him to be benched now that we have less talent

I was expecting the OP to be a joke. It is, right?

No still 4 down lineman. Vernon, Mitchell, Philips, and Suh

Philips and Mosley can plug the middle. Get Mitchell out he's why were weak up the gut.

By this logic, we should have Landry as our running back and move Ajayi to TE. How about we move Grimes to RT?
