I record all the games on get on TV just for this reason, so I can watch them in the offseason.

The game I decided to pop in tonight was the opener against Pittsburgh when we lost 28-17. The thing I really wanted to evaluate was our QB, Daunte Culpepper. I urge you, if you have this tape, to give it a look.

I picked up some pretty nice things from this game out of number 8 and number 1 was his arm. He has a cannon and can pinpoint position of the football. He is incredibely accurate and when given time and can give a defense fits. We all know how bad the offensive line was early in the year, but in this game, they protected pretty well. Even on the plays when protection broke down, Daunte was able to get it off quickly and hit the open receiver on a hot route. After watching just this little piece of Daunte, I am sold that he is our quarterback. We just need to find the right combination of lineman to protect him and then we'll have something special.

I did a little look at the stats to try to back my point, and here's what I got.

Daunte threw the ball 20 times in that half. (Remember our running game was non exsistant.) Of those 20 throws, Pittsburgh blitzed 11 times and not once did they get to Culpepper. Daunte completed 7 quick passes on those blitz plays and picked up decent yardage with each one. His total stat line was 11/20 with 143 yards. Of those 9 incompletions, 3 were dropped, 3 were bad throws, 2 were thrown away and one was broker up.

Now I know this is just one half of a game but I do recall people being all over Daunte for this performance. My point is that give him a little more protection and the health of his knee returned, and we have a great passer. I absolutely cannot wait till Daunte returns and leads this team to the playoffs next year.

Before you start the Culpepper hating, just read the thread and voice your opionion. No need to start any hate in this thread, I'd love to hear what everyone thinks, but lets keep it friendly.

If the OL wasn't such a mess, Culpepper wouldn't be in this predicament

I agree. Culpepper did look promising in that first game. I hope he makes a full recovery from knee surgery and regain any type of past form better than joey harrington or cleo lemon.

Thanks for that aqua, nice post. I agree, I think with improved oline play, and a healthy culpepper we are fine. But that doesnt mean that I still dont think that we should draft a qb. I like that brohm kid, draft him to take over for daunte in a few years.

I hope he's talking about Jim Mora Jr. and not his dad.

I'd love to see Culpepper groom JaMarcus Russell out of LSU. That kid is only 21, 6-6, 230lbs and is fairly mobile.

I really hope we give him the chance since he will be at full health

Finally!!! Someone with some positive energy and common sense. I'm tired of all these Culpepper haters and doubters. We need to have a little bit of faith in the guy and his abilities. Stop this QB in the first round talk because it would be foolish to use a 1st rounder when we have already spent so much on QBs. Until Pep gets fully healed, we need to work on every aspect of the offense so that when he comes back there are no excuses. We badly need a LT to cover his blindside and a solid running game that can balance our attack and take some pressure off the QB until he gets used to the NFL's speed again.

I totally agree....I am not a Cpep basher by any means. I hope he makes an awesome comeback and leads this team to several wins....who knows maybe even get the Comeback Player of the Year next year. We have to fix our OL though..thats for sure. I still think we need to draft a qb..not to throw in there next season, but to learn behind Cpep. Plus it never hurts to have another insurance policy in case Cpep doesn't do well

A few weeks ago I watched this tape as well.I was pretty impressed with his accuracy but what worried me was his immobility. We should have known right there that his injury was far from being fully healed. Looking back its obvious Mr. Ego himself definitely rushed CP back too early to make himself look good. He didnt want to let anyone know he might have chose the wrong QB. As for the future I have no doubt what so ever that Culpepper is the answer IF he is fully rehabilitated. Lets hope.

I'm amazed at how many positive reactions I got from you guys. I haven't seen this many Daunte supporters on this site since before that game happend. As I continue watching this game, the first drive of the second half Daunte led us 80 yards for a TD. On one 3rd and 7 he escaped a sure tackle, moved the pocket on the right sideline and hit Booker who took it 50+ yards.

Daunte has skills guys, just wait for the oline to develope and his knee to heal and we will have that big passing game we all thought we had this year.

The offense just seems so much more alive in this game even with the absence of our running game on that particular night. There are more receivers getting involved and we are taking a TON more shots down the field. I love watching the offense when Daunte is in there. Honestly, watch this game and then watch the game on Christmas against the Jets. It is a completely differnt passing game.

I can agree with that my man. And like I said, lets hope that mobility is restored in the healthy knee.

I agree with ya man, Daunte is our guy. I can't believe all the people on here who would rather Harrington or Lemon instead of Daunte. Culpepper is one of, if not thee most gifted QB in the league. But people are so quick to judge and not give the man any credit for being in the position he was only 8 months after a devastating injury.
