Now, i know i know before you come out criticizing me saying its preseason we don't show our good plays and dont game plan have u seen our plays on the field? we came out running on first and second a LOT and our passes were short dumps. NOw, before you go crazy on me again..i know culpepper is trying to get comfortable behind the line and has only had so much playing time since his injury. But what stood out to me was when we had 2nd and goal from the 5 and he tried to run it and we got 1 yard. That wasn't my favorite play call. If it wasnt for teh penalty we would have had 3rd and 4. Now, i know its early but i want to start seein some down field passes stretching the defense when culpepper is in the game. He had a nice pass to booker but a lot of his passes were quick passes to chambers. Ronnie Brown and Travis Minor made his stats look nice with 15 yard pickups on 3 and longggg but besides those 3 passes, he probably had 4 completions for 30 yards. I want Mularkey to start being more aggresive PASS on 1st down dont get into that norv turner crap. Lets Spread the field!!

p.s. once again i know its preseason but our play calling thus far hasn't been that pretty.

I can't watch the game, but I understand what your saying. But like you said, it is the preseason. All good offenses are very "vanilla" now. Why revel all your tricks early? It's like going to see David Copperfield. If he did his big trick first, everyone would leave afterwards. Wait for the big finish. That big finish will come on September 7!
(But all the tricks won't be revealed that day either!)

This thread is a bit premature. If we see more of the same when the real season starts, I agree. Right now it's just a mild concern.....hopefully we're just vanilla because it's preseason.

No need to open up the playbook and give the Steelers something to watch for opening night. It will all be a suprise when we hit them with the big stuff.

Oh, do i hope your right!! ill be there and hopefully get to experience some sick plays first hand

Not to burst your bubble, but Mularkey really emphasizes smashmouth football. We'll take some shots from time to time (deffinitely more than in the preseason), but expect teams to get a huge dose of Ronnie Brown maybe even with some Beasley mixed in, especially early in the game. Remember the Steelers offense, The Bus was the wheels for it for so long.

yeah thats what i heard mularkey does. he didnt have succes in buffallo with that horrible talent but his pittsburgh days will hopefully be what we see here

Sorry, I almost spit coffee on the screen reading that. Mukarkey's smashmouth football means taking Ronnie out on every crucial 3rd down and throwing to your fullback in the flat.

It's hard to do much of anything with JP Loserman as your best QB. Enjoy the basement. Again.

Mularkey turned Kordell into a pro bowler, and tommy maddox was playing at the same level. You're right, we are gonna run it til the wheels fall off. And when you do that, it opens up the passing game. Culpepper will shine with that kind of play action.

Deffinitely agree with you. Mularkey uses the run to open up the passing game later on, and does a darned fine job of it.

Don't like what you've seen from Mularkey so far? I got news for you--it ain't likely to get much better. Play calling likely cost us 2-3 games last year, including that ridiculous call against you guys last year near the goal line.

I particularly laughed my arse off when I read the "smashmouth football" posts. If "smashmouth football" is throwing the ball every chance you get, particularly on 3rd and short or less than 5 yards from the goal line, he's your man. Better yours than ours....

You forget who your QB's were all season. Even if those are the calls mularkey makes for us (which im sure saban won't allow, but whatever) i bet culpepper completes them.

If you watched the game you'd realize that you spoke prematurely. Did you see Harrington? He was throwing 2 out of 3 downs almost. I think they are running more when Dante is in because of his knee. But if you watch the play calling with Cleo and Joey, it's way more balanced with tons more passing.

Also, since this is preseason the calls are very vanilla. I like what I saw and I'm happy with Malarkey.
