I know we all hate these threads ..but what was SPIELMAN THINKING WITH FEELEY?

the way I have always looked at is that when Rickypoo came calling, Philly turned right around after that initial conversation and did their very best job of drumming up a market for Feeley. What I think likely started out as an offer of a 5th or 6th round pick by us was then slowly moved up by the fact that Phily (true or not) had found 2 other teams to help them drive up the price. Now, I say again, there was at least 1 other team interested and it was written there was one more for a total of 3, including us. How far and what those other teams honestly offered is conjecture but Phily basically took Rick to the woodshed in the end. I liken it to fishing.....we were the ones who thought we were fishing..but we were actually the fish. Phily slowly moved the bait until Rick was sooo desperate and hungry that he bit too hard.

In the end, I think we (Rick) got so enamored that other team(s) were increasing their bid that he felt AJ was a can't miss. Rick overpaid and AJ has missed.

now that I think of it..i Think we got desperate when packers traded hasselbeck to the seahawks..we were trying to get hasselbeck for our 24th pick i believe

how many second round qbs taken last year have turned into starters? I dont know but if a lot have, then it was an awful pick, otherwise we need to let him develop as if he was a draft pick. I am sure based on his experience, we knew he may be somewhat of a project.

I mean what was it that made him want to give up a 2nd rounder for FEeley..feeley never showed anythign special other than a good arm..yes he had a good record because the eagles were a good team but come on...feeley never showed anything worth a 2nd round pick.. I mean if we really wanted to take a 3rd stringer why didnt we jus trade for billy volek..he has at least showed some big play potential in the games he has played...i just never understood the feeley trade...its about time we cut ties with feeley..he was not worth the pick
Instant Gradification at work again I see. Player is put in a horrible situation & does not shine, so its time to get rid of him. He is holding his own this year against yet another QB who knows the offense and has several years of experience on him.

Some of you overvalue 2nd Rd. picks. Dallas cut their 2nd Rd pick from last year just the other day.

One word - desperation
And that is not bashing Feeley but merely stating my opinion of Spielman's frame of mind at the time. It seemed like he felt he had to come up with someone and Feeley was the QB he came up with using that formula he supposedly devised.

A top 20 QB is worth a 2nd rounder. A top 10 is worth a 1st rounder. The going rate was a 3rd rounder but Miami fans and the organization were screaming for us to get somebody to replace Fiedler. Spielman didnt have any other options and wasnt in a position to play hardball. If you remember the big debate back then was between him and Brunell. Between those two I think Spielman made the right choice and I dont think we can wirte Feeley off until after this season is over

Shouldn't the question be what was he thinking his entire time here?

The bad far outweighs the good. If had just signed Volek as a FA (remember he was a FA who then re-signed with Tenn because he couldn't find a starting gig) and not made the desperate move for Gordon we'd be in a much better spot right now.

We would have taken Corey Webster with our original 2nd. Who knows how things would have changed at that point, but I'm sure we would have taken a QB later in the draft if Volek had proven to not work out.

The Gordon trade is what really kills me, he gave away the pick he had just worked for from Chicago out of desperation. Do desperate actions ever really work out for ya?

That's the thing...there weren't really any better options. He could have overpaid for Garcia or Brunell and ruined the cap for years. If AJ becomes a starter for us, a 2nd was definitely not too much to spend for him. Most teams would be very happy to get a starter with their 2nd pick.

Spielman and Wanny were in a tough spot last year. Their jobs were on the line and they knew it. Basically every move they made was out of deperation in an attempt to keep their jobs. It doesn't excuse many of the decisions, but how many people can perform at a high level under that kind of pressure? For that I blame the levels of management above them. They should have recognized the ship was sinking and got rid of them before it was too late.
